found my dream highlander

saw this on ebay. wish i wasn't broke. if it really is what they say and were still original i'd find a way. a factory short, big block, loaded highlander with good colors. something looks fishy about the spid to me though. is it just me or do you guys agree?

I'm pretty sure that SPID is bogus. I did a quick cross with a few of my SPIDs that I have here in my office, and some of those RPO #'s don't match up. IIRC res orange wasn't even an option in '72. Even though it was the same color, it appeared as hugger orange in '72.

the spid just looks funny to me, but my highlander is the real deal and says red/orange and not hugger.

semper, highlander was a package they offered in 1972 only. it was just an options package that had 3 different levels. the main thing you noticed differently is that they had a parchment interior with a plaid insert instead of houndstooth offered in 4 different colors. they all had monte carlo style hubcaps and the big below eyeline mirrors. you can do a search and find some highlander brochures on here.

I guess it just goes to show how all over the place threse SPIDs were. I have 2 red '69 Chevys that both have the same 514 paint code, but one reads LIGHT RED and the other reads MEDIUM RED. Both trucks are the exact same color. -lol

Re: found my dream highlander

yea, the spids are crazy on these things, that one just looks typed to me, but i can't understand why they would type one and make it all wrong for what the truck has. if they were gonna type it, i'd figure they would make it for what the truck is now. if it is really a factory short bed, big block highlander, it is a rare bird. i can't tell if it's got a big hump in the floor or not.

Re: found my dream highlander

I know this isn't a written in stone indicator, but I've personally never seen a BB truck without PB. I'm sure there were probably some made, but I've never seen one.

Either way that looks like a real nice truck truck. Something looks funny about the alignment of the driver's door and I'm not feeling the orange tail gate letters, but those are minor issues. Its hard to beat the look of that orange and white!

Re: found my dream highlander

the auction also states the rallyes are factory. hmm, they seemed to have forgotten that one on the redone spid. Also, what are those black things screwed to the bottoms of the door? and were the CHEVROLET letters on the tailgate painted the other color on the white field like that?

It is a nice looking truck overall, though.

Shouldn't it have power brakes on a truck like that? Being a 72 with disk up front it would be power right?

No, it doesn't have to be PB with disc, I have 2 disc brake trucks w/o power, but everybody big block truck I've seen did have PB.

yea, you can tell where a booster was mounted on the firewall and it does list it on the spid. the truck has definately been tampered with, i just wondered if it was really what the spid says from the factory, it could be returned to it's former glory. they obviously had to have something to go off of because the spid has the right stuff on it, just looks reproduced.

Re: found my dream highlander

They should have taken the money they blew on the tacky bedliner and bought a brake booster. The type looks too large on the SPID.If it was painted that thoroughly than why cover up a "nice" freshly painted bed interior?Mirrors changed/holes filed/how well?Red Orange is what they called that color in`72.I`m still not sure if it`s identical to Hugger and they just changed the name or if it`s a shade off.It looks like they made a trip through the local truck accessory shop just to bring down the value of what would be a nice factory truck:8" step bumper,bedliner,kick/door carpet,stereo,SRW...
The orange letters on the gate are "as factory".

Re: found my dream highlander

I've seen stock highlander seats. That ain't one of them.

Also, if I'm westportautocenter, I would purchase PhotoShop or similar and resize my photos so they don't get all screwed up like they were resized on 'my first resizer software'.

If they are too cheap to make the ad look top notch, you can guess at the quality of the restore.

That SPID looks fake to me. Also notice the trucks vin number CCSxxx , that "S" denotes truck came with a six cylinder not the 402 big block thats listed. Nice looking truck otherwise.

Re: found my dream highlander

nice looking truck but i believe it's a " built truck" not an original one. the lower moulding is missing from the tailgate and it appears the tilt is gone too. the fact that the door latches are painted over doesn't look like a "show quality" paint job to me. overall it looks like a very nice driver truck but it's being represented as something it's really not. if the body is solid and straight it could be brought back to match the option list which also looks phoney. since it's already modified, throw the body on a SWB 4x4 frame, type up a new option list, add highlander inserts and bingo, you have an original SWB 4x4 highlander.
