Diesel owners, report!!
Hey guys! I was just curious how many of ya'll own diesel powered trucks, and more importantly, how many of them are 6.2L GM diesels?
I own two of them at the moment, and that makes for a total of four 6.2L powered trucks, and one 5.7L powered truck that I've owned over the years. I love them diesels!!

I just bought a '84 GMC 2wd 3/4 ton from Montana, the speedo reads 475,000 miles. It was a diesel for a very good share of those miles. It now has a 350, the person I got the truck from got it from the original owner who owned a ranch out there, he said when he got it the speedo was disconnected... so there is even more miles than that on it. Definatly a good motor.

I have an 87 short stepside 6.2 Diesel. It was originally a short fleetside, but I swapped the box since the original was hashed. I bought the truck from the original owner and it has over 400k on it but I think the engine has been out and rebuilt. This guy special ordered it to get the shortbed with a Diesel. It is a fully loaded Silverado.
My uncle bought an 84 off the showroom floor and put 620k on it without ever taking off a valve cover. He went through over a dozen trannies but that is another story. My little diesel gets over 25mpg on the highway. Its no speed demon, but at over double the mileage of my 84 k10 with a 350 gas engine, I can't afford not to drive it!

over 600,000 miles
How do ? Mine is an '82 crewcab C/30 with over 600,000 miles. I'm the fourth owner. I have a question for Casey Flint: Did you do the diesel/700r4 conversion ? Mine has a 400(year-old rebuilt) but I want the OD. How hard was it to do ? Any landmines ? Email me if you would rather. Thanks. brad moore.

Brad, My '81 started out in life with a wimpy 305, TH350 tranny, and 3.42 gears. In '96, I converted it over to a 6.2L diesel, 700R4 tranny, and a few years later, installed the 4.10 gears. I'll email ya some more info on the tranny swap. My '81 averages 19 mpg. Not too shabby for a 3/4 ton truck, eh?

Ok deisel guys, I have a couple questions for ya. One, whats the redline on those things? And two, how in hell do you get 300,000+miles out them things?

1)Redlines are for going fast.....Diesels don't do fast, they do hills with a load. 2) 300,000 ain't nothin'......mine has over 6, althougth it is starting to puff a bit.

I asked because I always thought they redlined at like 3000rpm, and if so then 4.10 gears dont sound like a great idea even with overdrive....

Redline on the 6.2L is approx 3600 rpm. The governor on the injection pump limits the rpm to this speed.
With 4.10 gears, 27" tires, and 700 tranny, I hit the governor in 1st gear around 35 mph, in 2nd gear at 55 mph, and I've never hit the governor in third or fourth. With OD, I can cruise down the road all day long at 75 mph +. My K-10 with no OD, 31" tires, and 3.73 gears will still cruise down the road at 80 mph. I did just the other day on a trip to Nevada, MO. Most V8 diesels top out at around 3500 rpm or so. Most in-line light-duty diesels top out around 2800 rpm. Some heavy duty truck engines top out under 2000 rpm. As far as the miles? Diesels are built stronger than gassers, and if kept stock, can go indefinitely. I know of a few 6.2L's with more than 500,000 miles on them.

Exhaust
Casey,
What do you think about me changing my exhaust? I wanna go 3" pipe from the collector to 5" echo chambers back to 3" pipes coming up thru the bed behind the cab. What are the pros and cons to doing this?

All I can say is, that sucker's gonna be loud! I don't have any experience with echo chambers, but dual 3" is a good size of exhaust to have on an n/a diesel. Why not just straight pipe the sucker without the chambers?

I have an 83 diesel suburban...all 7000 pounds of it. not sure how many miles are on it. 5 digit odometer only, 5 digit ODOS are the stupidest invention ever......probably 230,000 though runs like a champ

Assuming everything is working correctly, a properly tuned injection pump will limit the RPM at 4100, stock specs. Though, it's pretty useless to rev the 6.2 over 3000 rpm. I own a 6.2 Blazer with hopefully 160kmiles on the clock (but i fear it has atleast double that )
I worked a while rebuilding injection pumps and injectors, also did misc. repairs for diesel engines all makes and models really. Cheers, -Axle

My 85 GMC Suburban has a 6.2L Diesel. I love it! Can't kill the thing..................................Just ordered a Banks Turbo for it.
