what break booster???
I am looking to upgrade the breaks on my 69 4x4. What years can I score a break booster from? I am looking at a 74 chevy, but not really sure what will work. I have discs up front and drums rear, just need the booster. I don't want to sound like a tard, but I don't know this stuff.

Re: what break booster???
personally, I'd stick with a 71/72 brake booster. No mods needed, remove and install.
I would also strongly recomend getting a new/rebuilt unit. used ones are only cheap untill the pop when you hit the woah pedal. Been there done that, and even lost an engine due to a blown booster. |

Re: what break booster???
Not a bad idea. I don' need any more problems. I did some drilling as a side deal for a guy and he owes me..... maybe I will have him get me a booster as payment. Thanks Longhorn man.

Re: what break booster???
Get a 3/4 ton booster while you are at it, 72 3/4ton 4X4 as it'll have the dual diaphram inside the booster and the brakes will be nice and smooth, easy to use and stop in a panic. I have had two or three 4X's (trucks and Blazers) and the peddle seemed to be hard on all of them with no amount of bleeding helping that) and in a panic stop the things never seemed to want to stop ASAP, so I swapped a new 3/4 ton booster on my last 4x4 blazer and WOW!! If you jab them, you better belted in cause you're gonna stop!

Re: what break booster???
Thank you guys. The 3/4 ton is a good idea. I will go that route.

Re: what break booster???
Correct me (please) if I'm wrong here, but aren't 3/4 and 1/2 boosters different - something about the bolt pattern and pedal rod? I thought I read that in another thread.
I have a 3/4 ton, and I want to buy a new booster, but they're all the 1/2 ones, I'm thinking I'd need a longer pedal rod.

Re: what break booster???
Nope from the same year it is a straight swap. If yours is a 3/4 ton, don't buy the half ton one as it is a single diaphram. Checker or autozone can get the 3/4 ton one for about $120, that's where I bought mine.

Re: what break booster???
You're right, 70rs/ss - but there may be a difference in master cylinders?
Check this thread in the FAQ: Boosters and MCs

Re: what break booster???
yeah I have a buch here. there is definalty 2 kinds single and dual and definalty 2 diffrent masters. If you go used you can expect price of the booster with bracket and rod, master and perporting valve for $100.00 shipped that way you can compare to new. these parts are still availble "over the counter" maybe if you post in WTB section someone has a set set around?? don't know but might save you some bucks

Re: what break booster???
The master is different, but not really, the 1/2 and 3/4 tons just put the front brake and rear brake resevoir 9SP?) On opposite ends, I just bent my 1/2 ton lines to go to the correct hole in the master. It is a bolt on deal and rebend the brake lines, for $120 and the reasonable assureance that it is a good part is well worth the savings over a who knows if it will work deal.
