Oil Pan Gasket

I swear I've been searching but..

When you guys do gaskets. what do you use? the gasket you buy at Napa etc. or the stuff that comes in a tube? Any recommendations?

Oil Pan gasket on a crate 350 btw

I hate oil leaks and i hate doing gaskets

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

I've never had good luck with gaskets from a tube. I know manufacturers use it extensively, but, I'm just not happy with results. They always seem to leak prematurely.

The rubber one from Napa is the one I use... haven't had a leak yet.... (knock on wood!)

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

Fel-Pro one piece is the only way to go. Simple to install and prevents a lot of leaks at the ends of the gaskets. Well worth the price.

Wow, I had an idea and it seems that by a semi unanimous vote it was a good one too!! One piece Fel Pros all the way, you still need a dab of ultra copper or the like in the corners, but it'll do the job!! If you can get the metal pieces that go alone the edge of the oil pan to ensure the thin pan metal doesn't warp. I do not know what you'd call them, but they look just like the pan rail and are pretty think, that is just a bit more insurance against leaks.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

I third the rubber, well worth the expense, but I'd definitely say, ALWAYS use some gook around the corners, no matter how good the rubber/steel is at not compressing out, the corners will still seep.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say use the RTV all along the front and back parts of the pan, probably don't need it on the side rails, especially with the reinforcement rails.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

Put some Hylomar between the gasket and block to make removal easier in the future.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

Rubber Felpro is the only gasket I will ever use again. I second the dap of sealant in the corners. My first gasket is completely dry but the one I put on the Jimmy leaks a small bit from the rear main. I did not use the sealant on either gasket.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

Cool guys, thank for the info

as a follow up oil leak question. how tight should valve cover bolts be torqued? I know not extremely tight but mine seemed to be really loose which is why I think oil was being slung all over the place it seemed. I snugged them up with a small rachet so I should probably replace those gaskets also

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

3 ft/lbs on valve covers, probably 5 on center bolts. Rubber gaskets you can go a little higher than with cork, but don't overtighten, you'll squish 'em out.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

who carries the felpro one piece? I have access to NAPA and Kragen. When you guys talk about putting a little silicone on the gasket, are you talking about where the curved parts for the timing chain and rear main seal meet the flat part of the gasket? I just put a 3 piece gasket set on my motor and I KNOW it will leak as soon as I put my motor back in service.

You have to lift the engine to remove the oil pan. Use caution...

If you need to do it, I'd suggest to get a manual and follow all of the steps to make sure you don't forget to disconect something.

I would go with the rubber also.If you have to go with any silicon type product (like intake manifolds)get some Right Stuff it is the best out there. It is made by permatex.
