shorty header question

I lowered my 67sw chevy, and now the stupied 2 1/2 exhaust and flows hit the ground on my dirt road in places. I really like the look of NOT seeing the pipes hanging down low. I'll also be bagging the truck this winter. I found some for like $350ish, any place that may be cheaper? I'm not sure what one I priced. I really like the coated headers, the black are ok but they rust.

Re: shorty header question

You'll have to modify the frame top rail for Hedmans [67/68 only], but they're cheaper...mine were $139 a set. The black ones take a really long time to rust around our area. If you want coated you get upgraded to 3/8" flanges up top, but I think they are over $300.

Re: shorty header question

Any pics of your headers, price sounds great. Also, how much moding? Where did you get your Hedmans, from just a speed shop? I can paint them with a high heat paint when I get them and they should be ok.

Re: shorty header question

I got mine from Summit last winter when I had the original motor rebuilt. Mine clear fine with just a small triangle slice [3/4"] cause it's a 70, but the 67's frame rails are thicker up top and protrude about 1" further into the engine area. I think Bill removed 1.5" on both sides in a gently curved cut. It looks great cause his frame has been painted now...wish I had pics.

Re: shorty header question

I understand....I never mind it becuase I always make my trucks my own, but I do understand the other side of the coin. It goes without saying that it's always better not to have to cut, but in this case the structural integrity remains very strong. The 67's have much more meat on them and unless you plan to put a ton of stress on your truck like racing or 4-wheelin' it should be fine.

Re: shorty header question

The 67-8 top rail is a good bit wider, and in 69 Chevy just cut the top down, so if you do the cut correctly without any sharp angles it'll be OK, I just put the header in the right place and mark the frame with a sharpie and pull the header out and cut or grind the top rail. Some headers fit better than others so the amount will for your will be different. Just try to cut as parallel to the frame rail as you can and keep the cut rounded and it'll be OK, look at the 69-72 frames and you can see what GM did to them and they are OK. PS those black sorties look good!! I like the clean bends, without the pretzel look!!

Re: shorty header question

Do you have the part number for those headers?

Re: shorty header question

Big Green,

Since you have plans to bag it, and since your exhaust system is running low - here's a great mod to your Trailing Arms Cross Member. I found this particular build while doing a 67-72chevytrucks.com search. I'm sure there are plenty of build threads on this mod and probably in the FAQ Section. Here's how the pass thru looks.

Here's the build thread
