1967 GMC SWB Diesel in IA

Saw this on Craigslist. Seems kind of crazy but may be neat. If anyone is near Sioux City IA they should check it out.

Re: 1967 GMC SWB Diesel in IA

Anyone near this truck? I've been looking for one with a Detroit so I don't have to go through all the work to build one myself. I contacted the seller and haven't heard nothing yet.

I wonder what Detroit it has. There were none used in CK series trucks until`82 with the Detroit Allison 6.2.In`78 GM started with diesels in the form of the converted Olds 350.

i suppose it isn't out of the realm of possibility that it could be one of the 2 smoke Detroits out of a medium truck.

Probably a 4-53 or 4-71. Easy fit.

Re: 1967 GMC SWB Diesel in IA

You`re right about that,Adam. It`s just guys usually want a diesel in a heavy duty truck.I keep having thoughts of putting my 300hp 6.5TD in my`67 GMC shortbed project. For $1,600 I can buy Peninsular Marine`s dual turbo setup and add another 150hp=450hp!Imagine smoking tires and the exhaust off the line in a lowered shortbed.

Re: 1967 GMC SWB Diesel in IA

Did get a reply, said it was an inline 6 Detroit...........I assume a 6-71, unless it is a later Series 50 4 cycle Detroit. I am trying to get some pictures. This one may find itself on a hauler to PA

Re: 1967 GMC SWB Diesel in IA

I looked at a 6-71 for my '67 C-30 and I am pretty sure it will not fit in a pickup unless the firewall is pushed WAYYY back. A Cummins 6-BT will barely fit these trucks, and 6-71 is a whole lot bigger than that.

Been there done that, and know 100% what your saying(Got one I put a Cummins in), but I don't know what other "Inline 6" from Detroit would be from that period???????

I've seen one put in a Ford, so its possible, with alot of mod's. The way this truck is setting though, I can't picture it either. Which is why I asked for pictures. My bets are they got the date wrong and its a 50 series Detroit, which would fit pretty well, and I actually seen papers on the 50 series and Detroit selling them as "Conversion" engines.

What does everyone else think? Never been around a 6-53? How much smaller are they than a 6-71? Would it fit? Heck, I did some measuring on a 4-71 and it would be a stretch to fit one without modifing the firewall!

I've never seen a inline 6-53. I don't think an inline 6-53 even exists, but I couldn't swear to that. I know a 6V-53 fits into a pickup quite easily. That's really what I want to eventually put in my '67.

Special K, looks like a 4-53

67 C-30, I've never actually seen a 6-53 either, but seem to recall spec sheets with them on it??????? 4-53's were popular here in mobile equipment, I'd wager if their is such a animal as a 6-53, it would be in a log skidder.

Main reason I'd like to have a 2 stroke Detroit in a Pickup is because I could pop a Jake Brake on it from a bigger engine and have that option while pulling a trailer.

How about a 6v-71? any chance one of those would fit without firewall mods?

I agree, that looks like a 4-53. I can't swear there isn't a 6-53, but I did quick search and only came up with info on 6V-53's. I jake brake on a screamin Detroit always sounds wicked!!
