l6 air cleaner options
What are the air cleaner options for a l6 engine with the one barrel carb?
As you can see in the picture the one on it is pretty small and the previous owner wants it back. The picture was taken just after we put the engine in the '67 swb stepper we built from the '67 C-20 lwb stepper and other donors. Danny |

Re: l6 air cleaner options
You can buy like a 10x2 or what ever size filter you want with a normal 5 1/8th inch hole and buy an adapter kit at local parts house to neck it down to the size of the carb. I was going to do this on my 292 L6, but the brake master cylnder was in the way because of the hydroboost brake assist system. So I had to use the orginal air cleaner. I ran a dryer hose to the air intake to the rad support for cold air intake.

Re: l6 air cleaner options
Here is an option,,, The first pic is a paper element filter for the six cylinder 250 and 292 which is offset. They also make an oil bath setup which is offset,,, these are used when you are running a brake powerbooster setup. The second pic is an original paper filter which is used on engine which are only using a brake master cylinder by itself.

Here's what it look like with the adapter for a larger chrome one. I bought the stuff at Auto Zone. The plastic adapter for the carb neck is cheap but looks better than the smaller one.

Good Morning,
Thank you all for the information and pictures of air cleaners for a l6. Now I just have to figure what look I want, stock or after market. Danny |

Re: l6 air cleaner options
Good luck finding a stock cleaner in your area. Here, parts for these old trucks are about as hard to find as hens teeth...

Re: l6 air cleaner options
I know what you mean about parts getting scarce.
l6 engines and parts are getting real hard to find around here. A lot of people just scrap the l6s and 4 speed transmission. If I can ever get in the loop around here for old trucks I am going to start to collect l6s and 4 speeds. I now have two l6 engines, one in the '67 and one in the old '67 lwb frame. I think I am going to pull it and see if it is good enough to save and rebuild, it has been setting for a pretty long time though. Danny |

Re: l6 air cleaner options
If you want something a little different, go to your local autoparts store and get an adapter from your carb's neck to a 5 1/8" carb's neck. use it with a "turbo" hat and have a "COLD AIR INTAKE" design. I did this for a friends truck with a 292. Works great.
