blended grill

I know the pictures are crappy but it's late here and I just finished. I'm sure this has been done before but I haven't seen it so here is one for the rest of you that are sheltered like me. If you don't know what I'm talking about it is a billet grill with the stock grill strip and bowtie in the center. Whadda ya think?

Re: blended grill

thanks for the compliments. I'm really pleased with it now that I've seen it in daylight. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics during the process but it's pretty simple. You do everything as usual for installing the billet grill obviously but you take the center trim piece which is held on to the stock grill by nuts on the back (the trim and bowtie have studs on the back) off the stock grill. Simply place the trim onto the billet grill with the studs in-between two of the rails. Unfortunately the studs are shorter than the rails are thick so I just used wire wrapped around the studs and then wrapped around the rails behind the trim. that's all folks. I'd be really suprised if I was the first to do this, anyone have pics of another?

It turned out great. I don't have any "real" pics, but I did have plans to do this on my 82 Blazer. That was before I decided to go with a 73-74 grill.

I believe that he is changing out the front clip sheetmetal to a 73-74 style . It will loook like a 73-74 . Whatever the case , since he is doing it , it will no doubt be awesome when done . Frank

Re: blended grill

Frank is correct. Even though I have a small fortune invested in a highly modified 82 front end, I could not resist the urge to chase my passion. I purchased, new, used, and NOS pieces to convert my 82 Blazer to a 73-79 front end. I plan to run a 73-74 style grill with a couple of slight modifications....;0

i have a complete front end from a 74 swb what would you have to do to the firewall to make that body style work on an 81-87?

Re: blended grill

A 73-80 front end will bolt right to a 81-87. the only required change is the wiper stalks which require new holes drilled to use the pre-80 version on the post 81 version. (and some wiring changes)
If you want it to look 100% correct, you would have to weld up the 81-87 hinge holes in the cowl area also. The firewall is exactly the same.

Bringing this topic back up, do you have any daytime pics of the billet grill with the 84 grill?

Re: blended grill

It looks really nice. In the pics you posted it kinda looks like it could have been a factory option. I'm guessing it is a little low because there is a bar in the way of the studs to have it centered? Maybe you could cut the grill right behind the studs and weld tabs in. I would use a TIG for that or you will have to cover the rest of the grill so you don't get weld spatter on it.

Didf not know you could remove just the center trim from a 83-84 grill. Ihave a stock 84 grill but it does not have the chrome trim (its a custom deluxe grill) will Ihave to find a silverado grill to get the chrome trim . Ihave a billet on my 84 now but would like to break it up with one of the center trim pc's.
Ialso like the way this looks. How can you get it to line up with the headlight bezel trim more evenly ?

Re: blended grill

i suppose you might have to cut some billet out to get the studs to line up in the correct place, and maybe gring the two bars down from the inside so you could use the original nuts to hold it back together. just a guess, but should work. should be enough room for error too if you mess anything up since the strip is tall enough. the space where you cut out for the studs should get covered even if you mess up.
