differances in small block intake manifolds??

Ok i went to a swap meet and bought a small block manifold. I went to take the old one out(cast) and it seems to be different. Mine in the 67 has a oil filler thru the front of the manifold the new one does not? Other than that they look alike. Did i mess up or is there something i am missing.

thanks
Vance

Re: differances in small block intake manifolds??

they did away with that in 69. If you just install valve covers with an oil fill hole, a breather, and a PCV, then you'll be way ahead of the game. The PCV is a smog item that does only good things to your engine. (the oil fill was also a vent for the old road draft system which was replaced by the PCV in trucks in 69)

Re: differances in small block intake manifolds??

That far left hole upper is for a vacuum port. You can plug it off with a screw-in plug or use it for a vac gauge/brake booster etc..

Some newer intakes also have the area that can be drilled out to place that old oil filler neck into. I have thought about adding one again but just went ahead and bought a breather for the valve cover. If your valve covers don't have holes then you have another issue.

also make sure that your old thermostat housing bolts down all the way before you add silicone. My edelbrock intake didn't want to take mine, but a newer one fit... could have been the helicoil that I found in it as well...

looks like maybe an area for a divorced choke. My 68 had one kinda like it, there is another piece that bolts onto that. it would have a coil inside that reacts to the heat of the intake and moves a bar to adjust the choke.

Not for sure but that's my guess...

Re: differances in small block intake manifolds??

You bought a manifold for a 70's engine. It has the EGR (exhaust gas recirulation) spot. You will need to install an EGR valve. Or a blockoff plate.

The flat spot is for an EGR valve, or an EGR block off plate.

Re: differances in small block intake manifolds??

The block off plate can be made easily with minimal fabrication, or, you could probably go to edelbrock's www and see if they sell it alone, I had picked up a new performer back in 2000 and it came with the plate.
