what year ps pump?

hey all,

I was hoping some one could tell me what year power steering set-up I have.
The vin on the cab says 1967 but someone told me that my frame must be a 1968 due to the indent for the steering box?

another question, is the pump in the reservoir or is that the pump in the steering box?

last question, what would you call the seal where I have the arrow pointing? I'm leaking pretty bad there, does the steering box need to be pulled right apart or can the seal be changed easily?

Re: what year ps pump?

The pump pictured with the silver brackets is from a later model. The brackets look like they are off of a van.

You will want to pull the steering box as you will need room to work on it to replace the seals. I believe NAPA still has seals for the box.

Re: what year ps pump?

that would be the input seal.
The pump is in the reservoir
look at the numbers on your frame, that'll tell you if it belongs to the cab or not.
You can see them just a little in this pic;

Re: what year ps pump?

Is that a long water pump? I've had several people locally tell me that every 67 they've seen had the extra dimple in the frame. Go figure!

Re: what year ps pump?

it's a long water pump

as a side note for longhornman

I can't make sense of the VIN on the frame

The cabs VIN is CE1471117722 which works out to 1/2 ton v8 1967 oshawa

The number on the frame above the steering box is CZ171540 which doesn't make sense based on the vin decoder on this site

It makes total sense. Somebody put a different cab on that frame. The last 6 digits of the frame should match the last 6 digits of the cab.

Re: what year ps pump?

The internals of the pump are the same for about a 20 year timespan. The only differences are the reservoir housing, hi-pressure outlet valve fitting, and the pulley type.
Looking at your reservoir, I'd say it's something from the 70's.

Re: what year ps pump?

I have a stock '67 C-20 and it does not have a dimple on the frame for the power steering box.

My son's '67 C-10 had power steering but did not have the dimple on the frame, he had the ram assist type power steering.

My '67 C-10 short stepper has the dimple on the frame, but the frame is a '69.

ok, I think I get it. So the VIN on the frame will only have the production number where as the cab has the chassis, engine etc. codes and production number. That would explain why I couldn't decifer the VIN on the frame. Sorry noob here

thanks everybody

Re: what year ps pump?

Just a note: I have personally seen/verified several factory 67 C series frames with the clearance dimple for a ps box, first year for K series ps & dimpled frame was 69.
