Smile tranny overhaul ?

Does anyone know of a well documented overhaul manual for a Saginsaw 3 speed manual transmission. I have a 1967 C10 and am contemplating rebuilding mine. I have never worked on, much less overhauled a transmission before, but hey there is always a first time for everything.

Thanks,
Guy

Re: tranny overhaul ?

I have the orig.GM overhaul manual which devotes 9 pages to overhauling that unit. That's what I'd use. But I can't personally vouch for it. There are also detailed instructions in the Haynes manual (never used it though) available at any auto parts store.
You will need access to a press and will need gear pullers,snap-ring pliers etc. to do the job right.

Re: tranny overhaul ?

No offense to anyone, but Haynes manuals are good for one thing: KINDLING for making a campfire!! The last one I had was for an old Mazda pick up. It had 2 PAGES on how to pull the head and replace a head gasket. They left out about 1/2 the steps needed. Not sure where you're located, but out here in Southern California there are several places that specialize in oddball manuals like that. Good luck!

Re: tranny overhaul ?

Go on evil bay and search for "chassis overhaul manual". There are some there for less than 10 bucks. I would think that any year from 67 - 72 would cover the saginaw 3 speed.

I have the GM 1970 chassis Overhaul Manual for Passenger Cars, 10-60 Series Trucks and 1969 Corvette. There is about 6 pages on rebuilding the saginaw 3 speed.

If you don't want to buy a manual I may be able to scan the pages on the trans overhaul for you.

Rebuilt mine about 4 years ago, and also an overdrive trans. last year. They're not that bad. Go for it!

LOL . . . that' pretty much been my impression as well, along with Chiltons and later Clymers.

Best bet: if you're near a well-stocked library, check out Mitchell and Motor in the reference stacks. They usually tell it like it is.

Re: tranny overhaul ?

I rebuilt mine earlier this summer - well, replaced a bearing and synchro, etc. I used a Motors manual, since, well, it's about the best out their, in my opinion. The steps were all there, along with enough pictures to make it easy.

Like someone mentioned above, they're pretty simple. Not counting waiting on parts to arrive, I think I spent a total of 5 hours working on it. That includes pulling the tranny, and putting it back in.

Go for it! Get yourself some info, and tear into 'er. haha.

Which Motors Manual did you use? I went to their web site but could not find a manual that had my transmission in the title.
Also to all,
Are there any specialty tools I will need to complete my overhaul?

Thanks,
Guy
