help need input

i'm new to the board and i am have a 72 c10 two wheel drive. an i am having problems getting my engine to start. when i got the truck it did not have a carb, alt. and the wiring was all screwed up me and a friend rewired it by the book and put a new distributor, carb, intake, spark plugs, wires and etc.. and when we go to start it we get a fireball shooting out of the carb. we checked the timing of the distributor and everything else but the timing chain and that is the last resort. if you have any inputs on what might be wrong please let me know thank you.

well in that case. it sounds like a mechanical problem. if i were u i'd pull the valve covers and try readjusting the valves they might be too tight. who knows with what u have said about the other things on the truck it wouldnt surprise me that the same jerk just tightened down all the valves way too tight.

I wouldn't give up on the timing just yet.
Remove spark plug #1. Thats the one on the front of the motor on the drivers side.
Manually turn over the motor with a socket, extension, and ratchet at the front of the harmonic balancer. (Clockwise)
As the timing mark on the harmonic balancer aproaches the timing pointer / indicator, put your finger tightly in the spark plug hole while you continue to turn over the motor manually.
You should feel air compressing. If you don't, keep turning over the motor until you feel compression and stop turning when the 0 timing mark lines up.
Set the distributer in place, and line up the rotor so that it is directly under the #1 spark plug wire.
NOTE: The distributer may not go down into the hole all the way. This is ok as long as at least you feel the teeth engage.

Get in the truck and just bump the starter (with the coil wire off so the truck wont try to start).
The distributer should fall into place in the correct place.
Slightly tighten the clamp on the distributer so is wont move on its own, but you can move with a little effort.
Oh yah. Put spark plug #1 back in, and the coil wire.
Now the truck should at least start.
You will have to probably still adjust the timing slightly (move the distributer one way or the other ) a little. Adjust it til it doesnt ping under acceleration.

Hope this helps. Sorry about writing a novel.

Let me know if this helps!

Darren

The cam may be out of time, or the timing chain has been replaced
and they didn't set the marks right. Good Luck.

Maybe the fireing order is out of whack.
It is a long shot but worth double checking

First time I ever rebuilt an engine I got similar symptoms when I tried to start it, tried all the usual things, couldn't figure it out. A mechanic friend of mine took one look at it wandered to the back of the car, put his hand over the exhasut and as I cranked it over it tried to suck his hand up the tailpipe! I had the cam timing 180 deg out and it was sucking in through the exhaust and blowing out through the carbs. Try the hand over the exhaust test whilst cranking it over (coil lead off!) any sucking and you know what to do!
