700r4 adapter for transfer case....need help

Ok guys. I bought the '72 K20 a few months back. The PO had installed a 454 and 700r4 in front of the NP205. The 700r4 shifted great, but I want to install a 4L80e because I plan on doing a lot of towing with this rig.
After doing some research, it looks like I'm going to go with an Advanced Adapters kit. Anybody have an idea on the make of the adapter?
Thanks,
Casey

Re: 700r4 adapter for transfer case....need help

Why not just keep the one you have? The 700r4 and the L480e are very similar. Aren't they basically the same externally? The adaptor you have should work....
Are you aware of the electronics required to run the L480e?

700R4 = 4L60(e)

4L80E is the bigger brother.

Looks like you have a 2wd 700R4 there that someone created a spacer to get the correct input depth on the t-case. Got pics of the t-case and adapter?

I'd say home made there.

Now my question: Why go with AA, when you can get a stock adapter that will do the job?

Also, you know the 205 you have now is 27 spline and the 4L80E will be 32 spline?

(let me know if you need pictures, I have all of the parts sitting in my garage)

Re: 700r4 adapter for transfer case....need help

Home made? It sure is a nice piece for home made.
The output shaft on the 700r4 has definitely been cut down as the cut is not exactly square.
Grendel, I've followed many of your post concerning the 4L80e swap, so, yes, I know the NP205 is 27 spline...and yes, I know the 4L80e is 32 spline...and yes, the Advanced Adapter kit does not include the 32 "full spline" output shaft I'll have to install...and yes, I would love to use the rare factory adapter...can you give me a source for it? Here are some of the pics.

I have three of those adapters in my garage. They're not super rare. Also, 4L80E's can be found with full splines to get complete engagements. I have two of them. They're a 4wd trans, from 91-95.

I say home made because someone adapted an early model 205 (male input) to a 700R4. It looks like they cut a late model adapter to make the spacer, then used the 205 adapter and clamped it together. They probably needed some length in the adapters to allow for the coupling sleeve.

This adapter will bolt that t-case to a 4L80E

I'd swap the input on your 205 to a 32 spline female and call it good.

The 400/205 adaptor will work, but the ID is different between the two, where the adaptor bolts to the tranny. It's a couple thousands off, can't remember the exact amount, but don't see why you couldn't trim it to fit.

Re: 700r4 adapter for transfer case....need help

Hi Grendel...thanks for the input. This is a confusing subject to a 4x4 newby like me...I've tried to get the right info from previous posts, but obviously missed some points.
I have a '94 4L80e out of a 2wd truck. From what you've suggested, I need the factory T400/NP205 adapter and change my 205 to a female 32 spline input?
Thanks,
Casey

b454rat,
I think I read that somewhere as well. Thanks for the tip.

You will also need to cut down the output shaft on the transmission.

Then again you'll also need a trans controller. I plan to use a factory one, 91-93 Diesel 3/4 ton
