Better steering

I'm on my 3rd steering box and am not really happy with the way the 67 steers.
The one in it now is the "quick ratio" box. Around town, under 45mph it's great but it's too sensitive above that. Plus it has the typical slack of the old days... I can drive it ok but my 16 year old daughter is going to be driving it back and forth to school and I'd like it to be better.

Anybody have a good suggestion... variable steering box of 73+?

Re: Better steering

On my 69 I took the gear box out of a 72 chevy and the one on the GMC is out of a mid 70's dodge truck. Looked the same as the one on my 69 Chevy.

I don't have much problem with the GMC but on the 69 Chevy it also feels squirrely. Part of the problem, I think, is because I swapped the inline 6 with a 350 so it's a little front heavy. On top of that, the tie rod ends and the ball joints are a little worn.

Re: Better steering

I put a complete setup from a 87 on mine on yours you may need special hoses to switch to the newer fittings.Or you could always call Flaming River.

Re: Better steering

What kind of shape are your ball joints and tie-rod ends in? If all that is good, you might want to think about buying a reman from orie-vance-zone they all carry them for around $140. I'd shoot for a '76 model box because that will give you variable ratio and the correct fittings for your hoses.
