stinking exhaust

I'll be doing the exhaust on my k5 here in a few weeks and was wondering if adding a cat would help get rid of the exhaust smell? Its not real bad just smells like an old carbeurated engine and my 3 year old stepson is always telling me the truck and blazer are "stinky" Any suggestions?

Re: stinking exhaust

are you having any smoke coming out? you could be burning oil (bluish smoke) or leaking water into the exhaust(white smoke) or even running too rich (black smoke)is there a cat on there now? sometimes a slightly or fully jammed cat will stink.. usually like rotten eggs.. similarly a bad alternator will make the truck stink like rotten eggs but then youll have starting problems.. could oil be leaking onto the exhaust?? and lastly could anything from a plastic bag to some road kill have gotten onto the exhaust? that will also stink to high heaven...

Re: stinking exhaust

87 octane can smell kind of nasty, just because it's low quality compared to 93. Put a tank of 93 octane in just once and you will smell the difference.

I tend to like just a touch of the unburnt gas smell but not too much, even if it is 87 octane.

Re: stinking exhaust

Yeah it may be cheap gas or trash also change out your filters and pour a bottle 1/2 pint of everclear from the drugstore,Imean liquerstore and then put some good gas and see what it smells like,If that don't work then you got carb and air problems.

Re: stinking exhaust

i bought a bottle of that fuel additive and it works pretty good, it was the cherry one and it made a big difference! You can always but race fuel which i think smells amazing but @ $85 the 5 gallon tank i dont think you will be driving everyday. i think you should check out the way your truck is running because even that lil additive can get expensive because the 4 oz bottle does one of our tanks figure everytime you fill up you have to add 14 bucks per bottle. your pocket will fill up after a while.

Awe the strawberry is great,do any of you all know what everclear is?Its grain alchohol I think its 150 proof it cleans moisture, trash and such out of your tank,I don't have but a 5 gallon tank but my gas costs 8$ a gallon for Sunoco 114 octane

On my '82 K5 I replaced some ratty old pipes that dumped before the axle BUT had a cat on each pipe with full length pipes, H-pipe, Flowmasters, etc., with NO cats and I could smell the difference.
On my crewcab when i get that far I am going to buy some cheap cats and put one on each pipe.

Re: stinking exhaust

I was wondering if you could use 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol rather than everclear?
