ram horn help!!!

I got this problem. I am running ram horns on my 283 and cannot find the right altenator bracket. My driver side manifold has the cast in bracket tab but I cannot find a bracket to work on it. I have been pulling out my hair for months. I made one thaty kind of works but I want the right one so I dont have to worry about throwing a belt. I bought one of the low mount brackets for the bottom of the engine, but the altenator does not really line up with the crank pulley. Any ideas or pics? What are you guys with ram horns running for bracketry????

Re: ram horn help!!!

Go to your favorite local auto parts store (FLAPS) and look in their specialty section. Mr. Gasket makes a bracket for the top of the alternator to the water pump and a bottom bracket that attaches to the front of the factory ram horn exhaust manifold. I have this set up on a few of my 4-5-6 Chevy trucks with 283/327 V8 engines and factory ram horn exhaust manifolds and they work great.

I hope this information is helpful and good luck with your project.

Re: ram horn help!!!

For ref: Here's what the oem lower bracket looks like...not sure if p/s equipt bracketry looks any different. You may note the spacer bushing welded to the business end.

Ive since swapped the original 283 for a crate 290hp 350; and opted for a low mount bracket (Mr. Gasket p/n 5179). The upper mount header combo business wasn't doing the trick in my case. Low mount was a perfect match for me.

I came across the Mr. Gasket brackets as a result of not having the factory correct alternator brackets. I have since acquired a number of factory set-ups like valvetubehead posted, so I prefer the stock appearance and fitment. For me, it is hard to beat the factory set-up when going "stocker".

Re: ram horn help!!!

my stock bracket looks like the mr gasket, on the manifold, the bolt holes are in a different location than the pic above, they are on the side of the manifold, not the front. I was curious what the different applications are between his style and mine

Re: ram horn help!!!

Well I feel like an idiot. I fixed my own problem. I was just thinking way to much. Turns out the altenator will just bolt right the hell up to the ram horn front tabs. I thought the two holes on the front of the manifold were for some kind of special long forgotten bracket. But I bolted it to the upper most outboard hole and attached my chrome arm over from the block and was done. Way to dang simple. thanks for the many responses. I will try to post some pictures of what I am talking about......

Around here it also takes a keen eye, rapid stereotyping and ample planning to make some stops.
We have a v. large population of underqualified motorists inhabiting our thoroughfares.

That is a very clean looking set up! If we weren't running P/S in our trucks I would definitely use it.

That was my first impression...very clean. Also, tall valvecover friendly...although I like the shorts.
