Is a 1st Gen Steering box same as a 2nd gen?

I have a few of the 73 up style 4x4 steering boxes and I am wondering if they bolt on the same as the 67-72's. Has anyone tried this? Thanks Ryan.

Yep, many times over.

Right now, I have a 97 box on my 68 Frame.

Wow. No kidding. That is pretty cool. Did you just reposition the pitman arm to use on the 68?

No, I used a 2WD box with a Jeep pitman arm to go cross over tseering.

4wd is a push pull (front to back) set up. 2WD is side to side.

The only difference is the sector shaft and they interchange betwixt boxes.

Watch your line fittings. They change to the o-ring style at some point.

Is the newer steering box a different ratio?

The 97 I put on is a fast ratio, with supposed variable effort...

Grendel, I wanted to say thanks again for your input on this thread. I had to come in here and find it again because I was having issues getting a power steering line for another project I am building. Once I found the thread it was a no brainer. Thanks again!

Re: Is a 1st Gen Steering box same as a 2nd gen?

only issue would be that 67 and some 68 frames are flat and the box won't bolt up without an adapter or spacers on the frame. Or some people "dimple" their frame with a BFH and a torch.
