Power Steering Pictures
Fellas, I am going to install power steering into my 1972 C-10. I have three sets of pumps to choose from and each has a different mounting bracket. Can you guys with PWR Steering shoot a picture of your stock steering pump mountings? I have a driver side alternator and plan on mounting the pump to operate off the Water Pump.
Thanks! Any advice would be appreciated. KAW |

Re: Power Steering Pictures
here's my set up. 307 with driver's mounted Alt. Excuse the grungy condition.
The pump I got new, and the brackets and reservoir came from an early 80's van with a small block V8. I'm running it off the water pump too. I went though about 6-10 pulleys before I found the ones that worked right(went to elec. fan at the same time, so went from 1 to 2 grove on the WP) I had the high pressure hose made up at my local hose shop. I brought them two 'ends' with appropriate fittings and clean tubing. They cut and spliced in the flexible part. The first time I fit it, the flexible part was a little too long, so I brought it back and had it done again, 3" shorter. I prolly should have gone 4-5" shorter, but it's alright.

Re: Power Steering Pictures
Sure is a lot easier & cleaner to use a complete original system from one of these trucks! They fit right, hoses are readily available & cheap, and the hoses clear the inner fender correctly. It's hard to beat the right stuff.

Re: Power Steering Pictures
I just re-read your fist post.
If I would have realized that you wanted stock mounting, I wouldn't have posted |

Re: Power Steering Pictures
Mordachai,
no worries, Your picture actually is how I will have to mount mine, on the Water Pump Pully outside the alternator. Did you have any other issues mounting it? Where did you get the mounting bracket for the back of the pump? |

Re: Power Steering Pictures
both the brackets came off of an early 80's chevy or GMC van.
I used to have an 82 GMC van, and the it mounted up the same. The vans use a slightly different reservoir, with a longer 'tube' on the top so you can fill it due to the tiny hood on a van. The reservoir is another junkyard find, out of a later chevy truck. I just painted all the stuff chevy orange. I really had no issues mounting it. I got some thin copper shim washers. It did need to be shimmed a little for the pulley to line up true. I don't recall the exact number, I'd have to pull it off,but I think that it was one or two on the top bolt and 3 or 4 on the bottom bolt(behind the rear bracket) Last edited by Mordachai; 08-04-2008 at 08:03 PM. |
