Heater-Vent-Defroster control problem-any guesses

Just picked up a '81 el Camino yesterday.

Driving it everywhere right now which means I'm starting to notice ALL the little things that need attention/fixed. The heater/vent/defroster control moves just fine but not much air is comming thru.... sounds like the duct work is closed with the fan running.

As i recall the "slide" control when moved to whatever "chosen position" opens the duct work to the desired function ... which I believe is activated by a vacuum switch..... OR????

Any Guesses????? Thanks....

My best advise is to go to www.motorbooks.com and see if they have a manual for it.I would imagine they will have a "Haynes" but I don't know about others.IIRC and there is no guaratee of that, that era would be vacuum activated.

You can't fix stupid, not even with duct tape.

Reason I mentioned I thought it could be a "vacuum activated" system is I had a '84 Poncho STE NEW back then and had the same symptoms... I took it to the dealer.... Mr "NOT-Goodwrench" tore the whole dash apart trying to figure out the problem ..... THEN MR GOODWRENCH came back from being on vacation for a week.... replaced a simple part & all was well.... I recall it was something related to the system being vacuum operated.... in other words the control was NOT operated by "cables and levels".... afterall that would be so simpleand also "easy" to fix..... Thanks for the tip about finding a "Haynes" or.... a "surfing here I go"

Check under the hood for a vaccum pod, black plastic about the size of a baseball. Check the line going to it and going through the firewall.
