New here and need suggestions.

Had a 66 last year and just got a 64 project to start on. The new truck has a 283 and 3 speed manual that i wanna upgrade to a turbo 350 automatic. Im wondering if the th350 will fit in the tunnel or do I need to do some cutting??? The column in it is bad and im wondering what vehicle is a good doner for a tilt column??? thanks for any input and heres a pic of my old 66.

Very nice truck! I like it alot. I don't beleive you will have any trouble get a 350TH to fit. You may have to modify your linkage a little. As for a column, I've seen many different year models used. I beleive you can use columns out of trucks all the way up to 95 or 96. Good luck on your project.

Oh, and welcome to the site. I'm sure you'll like it here and find it very useful too. I have got a 66 myself. I love these old trucks.

Re: New here and need suggestions.

We need pictures of the new 64 truck now. The 350 will fit and you can use a column from a 70's to 1980 van or a 72 chevy truck if you can find one. Here is a van column I used in my truck and has been replaced by a new one because this one was a bit sloppy.

Re: New here and need suggestions.

I put the new column in and today I put in my new steering box and hooked up the steering shaft. I used one out of a 70's truck and cut the factory connection and used my u joint. It is a 36 spline on one end for the van column and a DD on the other end. Also the whole suspension is from a 75 chevy truck. The control arms bolt up to the 65 crossmember.

Re: New here and need suggestions.

Any GM column will work, but a 70-80 van will look better and fit better. All GM columns from 73-95ish are all the same, just differant lengths, which can be changed very easy.
