my ty truck wants to turn off on drive and reverse!

iv noticed that when i put my truck in drive or reverse it wants to turn off.
when its about to turn off i put it back on park and everything is fine!
why is my truck acting like this?
help me plz!

What RPM is your idle set at? If it's set too low in Park, when you put it in Drive or Reverse, it will stall the engine. Your RPM's in Park should be around 750-850 RPM so when you put it in D or R, it will drop to about 650-700 RPM's.

Now if it is acting like you just turn the igintion switch off, it could be your neutral switch on the column.

I assume you have your foot on the brake when putting it in gear? Try mashing the brake pedal with it in park. Does it still make it want to die? If so you are looking at a brake booster diaphram gone bad and leaking vacumn. If not then possibly when the engine torques over it is grounding a power wire. Look at the positive cable from battery to starter and see if it's touching the exhaust manifold or rubbing anywhere along the frame, etc.

ok i just turned my truck on and i put it in drive and i was fine but when i push the gas it turns off!

You're not giving us enough info.

Was it running fine before? and for how long? 2 days, 2 years? etc...

Did you change anything recently?

How old is the gas?

Was it sitting in storage for 10 years and you just got it out or is it driven often?

Has it had any kind of tune up?

What is the engine?

yes the truck was running fine before.
i had put in a new carb and the carb was flooding but i got that problem fixed and now my truck turns off with i put it in drive and i push on the gas pedal. it works fine when it is in park.
it has a 350!
i had just recently flushed my transmission fluid cuz my truck wouldnt reverse do to low fluid level.

I would say make sure the idle speed isn't turned down too much and if that's ok then make sure there isn't fuel leaking from anywhere. My truck was leaking a very small amount of gas from the bottom of the carb. once and whenever I would put it in gear it would turn off. I finally figured out there was a leak, it doesn't have to be a large gas leak to cause the vehicle to shut off.

i know this might sound like a stupid thing to check.
i know it was just flushed.

But do you have tranny fluid , lack of it will keep your torque converter from slipping and locks up instantly when you hit the gas.

Just asking here, not being smart, but are you sure? How did you test that you had the problem fixed, and how did you fix the problem? How long after the flooding issue did this problem present itself?

The reason I ask is it seems kind of like what is happening is at idle, all is well. Then, once you open up the primaries a little (mashing the pedal) it is flooding out again, and the fuel is just choking it out.

Depending on your carb, you can pretty easily take some fuel out of the mix, and see if that helps.

the crab is not flooding so it cant be that!
ummmm the tranny fluid looks good!
i mash the mash the brake when its in park and the problem still there.
when i just put it in drive it turns off!

So it want's to die every time you hit the brake pedal, even in Park?

I can think of a couple things.

Did you check your plugs after the carb issues? They could be fouled. Pull them all and look for a "wet" or "black" one. Tannish/brownish is good, other colors are not so good.

Some kind of vacuum leak, either at the carb, the intake, or a line? What is the idle rpm when it's in park? Is it steady or jumpy?

in park the truck is fine it doesnt die!
the truck is kinda jumpy!
i will check the plugs to see how they look!

i just pulled my plugs and a cupple of them are wet and are black!

wet and black is "Over Fueling"... or maybe even very poor spark.

Since your carb is fixed now replace plugs and see if that fixes the problem. see if your spark looks good and strong by removing a plug wire off the distributer, and see if it will jump about an inch (blue).. be careful i would use some well insulated pliers, and not ground yourself to the truck.

I'd get NGK's, they're fairly cheap (in case something else is wrong and they foul again) and they're good plugs.

ok i changed the plugs and it seemed to work!
i put it in drive and push the gas a little and it workd even in reverse!
i havnt taken it out in the street yet but i will do later!
