Hey Guys,

I'm thinking of painting my truck flat black. I'd rather use paint than primer. Should I go rattle-can, or buy the real stuff. What have you guys used. If I go with cans how many would it take to fully cover my SB SS truck? If anyone has pics you could post, and tell me what you used, and if you're happy with it, that would be great.

I'm going with cans at the moment, If you take your time and do even steady strokes while covering 50% of previous each time then it will turn out well. Mine looks great and barely has any "tiger stripes". Which i can going over later. I'm using Rustolium Automotive Gloss Black. It says gloss but I would compare it to the color that Project Old School looked like if you watch Trucks. I just scuff up the paint, wash off the dust and then mask and go at it. Looks great. Ive done the whole bed and back of the cab and I've used around...8-10 cans.

i went with black paint with a flat clear so it would not leave water spots

I used Blitz Black a few times. Cheap paint. Nice sheen. Buy a gallon and spray it on. Rattle cans will be spendy to buy that many. Great bang for the buck with that paint.

Not the best quality product, but cheap. Held up as long as I owned them.

Best and cheapest way i have seen is just adding a flattener to the clear....Although this pretty much means (no Buffing Afterwards ) it looks the best imo.......

A can of automotive rustolium is about 4 bucks.. so its going to be a 200-250 paint job. roughly

I would use Hot Rod Flatz. http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/hrf201.aspx . Its a single stage urethane. $150 gets you a gallon of paint, hardener, and reducer. It will look good and hold up well. Do it right the first time so you don't have to do it again.

I am going to use their Copper Pearl on my '64.

I would def. go this way if my panels were good to go but being 20 and in college, I can't afford to buy all new panels. I basically need everyting new but the cab so I wasnt worried about having the best paint job, just a quick good enough looking one.

I was thinking of going with their Red Firemist Pearl myself but can't really see the color very well on the net. I also thought about a copper color. I am kinda up in the air about it all. I can get the Red Firemist Pearl kit for $279 and that includes the clear and hardners and all.. The first color is the Red hehe. and the 2nd color is Firemist Copper... If you realy take your time rattle cans can look good
BUT only for about a year then it fades and/or wears off.

Its kinda like building a deck out of pine rather than redwood. Its cheap and looks good for a little while. you can usually buy rattle cans by the case and save money.
I did this truck with camo specified rattle cans. Single the cans where $4 each but a case of 6 was only $16. (mind you I bought 4 cases of each color) I layered it on pretty well :1 because it was sanded down to bare metal in aot of places and I wanted protection and :2 because I kept changing the pattern until I liked it.

Its now 2 years old and still looks good because of the nature of camo but has faded too much to touch it up with new cans of the same paint.

Thanks for all the replies. I saw the Hot Rod Flatz on ebay. Man they have a lot of colors to chose from. I ask them how much I would need and they said a gallon. Seems like a lot. What do you guys think?

I just saw Eastwood Co. sells the same thing as the Hot Rod Flatz for about 50 bucks less. Anyone use their stuff before?

I used about 15-20 cans of OSH primer on my bucket....

Looks ok and washes well. Looks better as time goes on.

Eventually, it'll be painted with Blitz, Hot-rod, and even SEM trim paint.

I did the '83

Silverado I used to have with Rustoleum automotive dark grey primer. It covers really well. If your gonna use primer, rattle cans will work, for paint, get the real stuff. I got my truck done with 6-8 cans, $24-$32

This might sound stupid, but is there some kind of wax you can use on a flat finish, for protection? My truck is a daily driver as most of you know, and I'm not planning on changing that.

I want to throw in another vote for Hot Rod Flatz. http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/hrf201.aspx .

I used it on a motorcycle two years ago and have been spilling gas on the tank regularly ever since with no damage. No rock chips on the frame either. It was easy to mix and spray with a cheap Harbor Freight sprayer. It worked real well, I'm getting more for my truck.

Tractor Supply Farm Implement paint is really good tough Enamel and it's $21 a gallon. They also sale the harder and reducer for it. I painted a Jeep I had for about $30, the right way just with the cheaper paint and it looked fantastic for the money. They also have a flat black.

my truck is getting hot rod flatz as well and after seeing Salazar44's truck Im sure glad I got it.

As far as waxing Yes you can wax flat paint it will make it satin. At least it did on my 85 jeep cherokee (sorry no pics) I sanded the paint to a haze repaired the rust and my buddy shot it with black primer for me. One day I got a wild hair and waxed it with liquid carnuba wax. I loved the way it looked but you have to wax it weekly.

Well, it looks like Hot Rod Flatz is the #1 choice. Eastwood Co. makes a Hot Rod Flat too. It must be new as no one said anything about it. Thanks Guys for all of the feed back. I'll post some pics when I get this done.
