Fumes in the garage - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I parked my truck in the garage to begin the tear down. It is parked about 12” from the washer/dryer and now all of our cloths that are washed smell like oil, gas, and PB Blaster. Needless to say the wife is not happy about this. Is there anything that I can do? Would putting an air purifier about the washer/dryer work?

maybe fans under the edge of the garage door(s) facing out - open the back window to get the draft drawing out of the garage - cover the machines with plastic sheet and lastly, buy lots of real flowers in pots - keep 'em behind the house and take fresh ones in to her every night...

Get rid of the wife---put washer and dryer in the bedroom closet on her side (that you no longer use) and work on the truck ALL of the time.

Seriously think about what you just stated in this post. Gas fumes and a electric motor or electric heater coils that could ignite those fumes. OUCH and BOOOOM would be a bad thing to happen. It can happen and it is not a good thing. Don't you just love the California housing designs, where there are no furnaces (So to Speak) and everything that is unsightly is in the garage, except the water heater, which is a little closet on the outside of the house---like a mobile home.

I have two customers with old chevys, as well as my 69 swb. Both of my customers have also mentioned gas/exhaust/oil smells in their garage. One has a nice 55 chevy wagon, and his garage is under his media room. I put mini catalytic converters on the 55, and the smell was gone. I am going to do this to my 69 soon. My garage is detached, but if I have been driving my truck, and come home, and park the truck in my air conditioned garage it will smell for several hours, and all I did was open the door drive in and shut my truck off. The mini cats work well, and do not hurt performance AS LONG as you Chevy is running well. rich running truck will clog the cats. And for what it is worth. The washer and dryer ARE in the house, and the bicycles and all of the other family stuff IS NOT ALLOWED IN MY PLAY ROOM, A 3 CAR GARAGE

I have done this a couple of times. The guy with the 55 wagon, just got his brand new 57 convertible, and it has two mini cats on it. the 57 is an ls2,supercharged,6spd automatic, and you smell nothing!!! His son now has the 55, and you smell nothing! If someone like me has a 4 or 5 gas analyzer in your area, ask them to check the emissions on your truck. for a mild 350, I would think the numbers would be like this:

Hydro carbons 300-500
carbon monoxide 2.5-5 %
oxygen
carbon dioxide

I cannot remember the last two, but two good cats will cut the first numbers by a ton. The smell will dissapear, and when the local treehugger committee starts fussing, you can say HEY I'M GREEN. SORT OF

The truck is not being run in the garage. The smell and fumes are just from the truck sitting in there.

I took a plastic tarp and put cup hooks under the cabinet thats above the washer and dryer and hung the tarp to cover tha machines and the wife is much happier. When cutting and grinding metal the dust ends up everywhere so I found out.

Mine smells too but my washer and dryer are in the house I usually crack the side door for awhile then lock it all up tight when I go to bed.

Kdailey,

That is a tough one. Fumes in a working garage is part of the deal…and a real bad deal if that is where your laundry machines are located. You can try a fan but even at that it doesn’t help much.

My old house caused a lot of nasty words between the wife and I over garage fumes as the furnace was actually in the garage so when the fan came on it blew all of the fumes, gear oil smell, cigarette smoke odor and ever other bad working garage odor into the house.

A few years later we built a new house with a 3 car attached garage to “park cars” in and a 1000 sq ft detached shop for me to work in. Now she complains the dogs come in the house smelling like a “shop”. You will never win!
