Radio/8 Track Experts? Can I hook up a 8 Track to a Dual Cone Dash Speaker?

Ok...I picked up my AM-FM radio from the shop today and I will be sending it out for a refurb. I also have a factory 8 Track. So here is my question...my dash speaker is shot so I will need to buy a new speaker. Can I install a dual cone dash speaker and them hook up the 8 track to it? I dont care about the left/right separation of sound but I would like to play 8 tracks. Also several vendors carry the Dash Dual Speaker-is one speaker manufacture better to use?
Thanks in advance?

Don't know the answer about the 8 track depends on the output it was designed for. Not many choices on dash speakers out there. But it is important I am told to match the correct Ohm for your indash radio or it may FUBAR and blow the resistors. Not sure the correct Ohms required but they do have a few in AUTOZONE of different ohms.

If you want a proper new one that fits go to the link below. You MUST use the 8-10 speaker with that original radio or you will damage it. The 4" x 10" delco special is what you want. Brand new, its $46. I bought one and it sounds great and allows more room (smaller magnet) than the original.

the speakers won't have anything to do with playing "all the tracks or not"...that's actually up to the head unit. They can however effect the range of sound you hear based on their construction. And yes, I think something like this is what you're looking for....or at least as compared to the type with one big woofer and 2 individual tweeters.

68GMCCustom...your on track. The reason I want these type of speakers is because I am not sure I could use a single speaker to hook up to the 8 Track and get clear music from it. But with a dual speaker set up I should be able to use the 8 Track and the AM-FM radio.

Re: Radio/8 Track Experts? Can I hook up a 8 Track to a Dual Cone Dash Speaker?

Wow, a thread on 8-tracks....whodathunkit?

"Several" years ago a neighbor had a garage sale. Among the items was a Zenith 8-track recorder that was a stand-alone component of his home stereo system. At the time, we had an '81 Impala 9-passenger wagon (4 kids, too) and I wanted something other than an AM radio. Answering an ad in the paper that I found, I bought an AM/FM 8-track radio, that was an option in the '81, at the time. You could still find 8-tracks (1982-4) and I even bought some blank 8-tracks so I could record some of my old black 12-inch "CD's" on them. Didn't do that. Still got the blank tapes and the recorder and the 8-track tapes.

Can't say I don't hoard stuff, can I?

Re: Radio/8 Track Experts? Can I hook up a 8 Track to a Dual Cone Dash Speaker?

I have a buddy in Tx who has a collection of 8 track stuff. He had a half dozen working players,a recorder, and about 10 (no kidding) dishwasher boxes of tapes the last time i visited.Glen has always had an 8 trak player playing in the shop.I've known him for 20 years and he will stop at a garage sale in an instant to look. He's several years younger than me and says he doesn't go in for those new fangled Cassette jobs.

Yea...I bought this 8 Track from off this board. It's a Chevy 8 track that I would like to hook up and play just to have something differrent and be able to play like the days of yesteryear. Hopefully I can pull this off.

Re: Radio/8 Track Experts? Can I hook up a 8 Track to a Dual Cone Dash Speaker?

Along this same line, I have a (Pontiac) AM/FM radio that is missing the Multiplexer that enabled the stereo sound from the radio. These same multiplexers were used to enable the stereo from the 8-track players to be played, too. I think my radio is a '67-69 unit, but don't know for sure. I can certify that it is complete but needs "reconditioned", to say the least.

Thanks again 68GMCCustom...
I spoke with Electro-Tech (very helpful and friendly) and purchased an 8 ohm Dual Cone Speaker that will mount directly in the front dash. With this speaker I will be able to play both the 8 Track and AM-FM radio. I may connect the radio to a single speaker verses both of them because I am not sure the factory radio can push two speakers. The speaker I'm using is the last speaker shown on the page. Again this site is worth the $25 membership fees. Thanks again.

Re: Radio/8 Track Experts? Can I hook up a 8 Track to a Dual Cone Dash Speaker?

Glad to help! And don't worry about the AM...it will drive those just fine.

I had a buddy in HS that a '68 VW with like 7 speakers (including the one in the dash) hooked up to the stock AM radio.
