Big Block Oil pan questions

The bottom of my oil pan on my 72 BB 402 is dented in. Can anyone tell me how much clearence there is between the pick up tube and the pan.

also I was wondering in the pan will come out / go back in with out unbolting the motor mounts.

and would I only need to change the oil pan gasket if I did.

thanks.

Re: Big Block Oil pan questions

I had to unbolt the motor mounts to remove the oil pan in my C2500 with 402. I don't remember how much clearance there is.

Re: Big Block Oil pan questions

Should only be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch between the pick-up and the bottom of the pan?? Where is the dent? The pick up is near the back to one side. If it has BBC mounts in it then the pan, may come out without lifting the engine, but lifting it will make it way easier since the extra space will be nice!! The pick-up slides into the lower pan baffle and the pan needs to slide kinda forward to clear it then back, so unbolting the motor and lifting it may be the best way. Get a one piece oil pan seal and some spray contact adhesive. Clean the block mounting surface (whare the gasket will seat) and spray the adhesive (get it at Autozone or Checker) on the side towards the block, let it get tacky. Stick it up there and go! No worries about 4 pieces of oil pan gasket sticking and staying!! (use a dap of permatex [I like ultra copper, but red or blue is OK as well] in the corners near the timing cover and the rear main seal to ensure no oil seapage in the corners) just an FYI!
