POR 15 and cab undercoat questions.

I need a couple of suggestions. I've looked around on here and I think I've decided to POR 15 my frame. I've got a line on getting in sandblasted so cleaning is not a problem. My question is this: Do I use just the black POR 15 or do I need the topcoat?

My other issue is I am wanting to clean up under the cab. How in the world do I get the underoat off? I was using a wire wheel on it some yesterday and it wasn't coming off.

I think I've seen both of these issues mentioned before but after some searching (and frustration with dial up internet) I thought it might be faster to ask. Thanks for the help.

One thing that helped with mine was Oven cleaner and pressure washer. Soak the stuff in oven cleaner (el ceapo stuff is great). Let is sit a while and then presuure wash it. You might need to do it severeal times, but that shoukld cut through a great deal of it . There is still going to be a lot of scraping and wire brushing, but the oven cleaner and pressure washer was a definite help.

I love POR 15, but I will caution you. If your frame is perfectly clean and smooth, it will not stick worth a darn. It likes a little surface rust. I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it is true. If you get it sand blasted and cleaned up I would then let it sit for a couple of days to get a little surface rust before painting. The straight POR tends to fade with UV light (not such a big deal on the frame) but there will be some fading. i would do the top coat if you want a shiny frame forever. If it doesn't matter to you , you don't need it. Definitely lay down some tarps to catch the drippings, and don't work in direct sunlight since it will dry quickly.

Por-15 alone is fine as long as it sees no sun light. It has no UV protection and will fade. I used Por-15 and then their top coat on my last frame. This one I will use Por and then a cheaper chassis coat. Just don't let the Por fully harden before applying the topcoat.

I too painted my frame wit POR-15 and chasis topcoat. My suggestion would be to spray it on. It will go SO much faster and look nicer when you're done.

As for the undercoating, I read on hear that a torch and scraper work the best. I haven't done it yet, but that's what I was planning.

i used a propane torch on as low as it could go, then a large scraper.... that took 95% of it off but for it to be perfect you will also need to wire wheel it...

auto paint suppliers have a product for removing undercoating one brand is "underoff" eastwood also carries it but youre much better off buying locally

I used oven cleaner for some and plain mineral spirits and a lot of rags and a small 1" putty knife. Just be careful with what you do with the used rags. They can combust if left in a pile or in a can or bucket with out soaking them with water.
