Re: 78 stepside steering
to convert to power steering you need the box pump pulleys hoses and belts.. its a job you can do in a day.. as to your current situation have you jacked up the front and checked the front end? have you inspected the bushings? ball joints? tires? that could be the problem

Re: 78 stepside steering
Slick: Start at the bottom and work your way up. At the end of each rod in the steering system there is a joint. 6 on 2WD, 4 on 4WD AND, 4 ball joints on either one. ALL the steering joints you can check by gently turning the wheel back and forth and looking for looseness. Ball joints are a little more difficult to check, have someone who knows check them. Steering boxes rarely wear out and get loose.

Re: 78 stepside steering
slick, pumps and boxes can be swapped all over the place so it's difficult to say what might fit where. Seeing as you intend to go from manual to power, I would go to the local bone yard and find a truck like yours and get what you need to make the change-over. Biggest issue I think will be brackets for the pump.
