Hello,
I want my truck to sound lopey. I want the cam to be very noticable. Can i install just a cam, or would i need to address other parts as well. Can i get the sound i am after without clearancing the heads? Thanks in advace, Rigo |

Re: Whats the biggest cam for a 6.0L
for info on the 6.0 I would go to www.performancetrucks.net this is a spin off from ls1tech.com
this site will have much more info on the gen3 motors. I put a 220/220 in my 5.3 and it is a rough idle...

242/248 .608"/.612" 110lsa
You'll notice it. But it'll be an absolute dog below 3500rpm.

Re: Whats the biggest cam for a 6.0L
aside from going with that big of a cam, youll need head studs, stall convertor, possibly different valvetrain parts (pushrods, rocker arms etc.)
Personally thats a lot of stuff to go through for just wanting a lopey sound. Also, dont forget, its really easy to overcam an engine and ruin its power. You shouldnt look for cams to put in by how they sound, you want a cam that matches other performance modifications done to the engine. I agree, a cammed out engine sounds good, but its not cool when you go to stomp on it and it doesnt go anywhere. So, id say, to do it right youd need headers, gears, stall convertor, intake, possible vlave train, definite head studs , etc. Your looking at a good maybe 5k for just sound....

Re: Whats the biggest cam for a 6.0L
You can have a small duration high overlap cam that will produce a lot of bottom and TQ and give you the chunky idle you want. Being I've been working on LS based motors since 01, they are kind of the area in which I am very strong and versed..
If it were me, assuming stock heads 6.0 shortblock (99-00 are 9.5cr, 01+ are 10.0cr), stock heads, I'd run something like a XER based 220/224 104/107 on the 99-00, and a XER based 224/230 104/108. You could still run this with a stock range stall, but I think it would feel much better with a 2,400 or so. This is going to keep the RPM's down to 6,000rpm shift points with a stock truck manifold. Switch to a LS6 or better and it will be more like a 6,300-6,400 shift point. Now, you can obviously go bigger, but it is going to kill bottom end, require a stall and quite frankly, with such low compression already, your DCR is going to go right out the window. I would love to see better heads on it. Even a stock 5.3 head has a 61cc chamber vs the 6.0 head at 71cc's. That alone would bump compression from 9.5 to 10.58 ot 10.0 to 11.3.. That will allow you to go to a bigger cam and keep a higher DCR retaining bottom end TQ, and allowing you to rev higher with a cam that has more duration and overlap. A good running motor is a well thought out motor..
