hood hinge? can't get her aligned

I've adjusted the trailing bolt on the passenger hinge to try and pull the hood down flush, but still not there. If I push on the hood, it will almost sit flush, is the hinge shot or what??!! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: hood hinge? can't get her aligned

This usually means that your springs are worn out.

Mine does the same thing - some day I'll replace the hinges.

Re: hood hinge? can't get her aligned

worn springs and/or hinges.
A band aid fix, loosen the 3 bolts that hold the hinge to the fender, now puth the hood up, as in opening it further than it is supposed to go. Not a lot of force, just enough to pivit the hinge. While holding in the 'further up' position, tighten the bolts back down. Very slowly lower the hood once the bolts are tight. Watch the rear edge of the hood, it may come in contact with the cowl panel. If it gets close, or actually touches, then loosen the hinge to hood bolts and pull it away.
This will snug the rear of the hood down once you get it ballanced out.

Thanks Longhorn - I've already tried this. Looks like a new hinge is in my future - LMC truck here I come

Re: hood hinge? can't get her aligned

Before you replace that hinge, spray all pivot points good with a spray lube such as white lithium grease. Work the hood up and down several times and spray it again. Try that before replacing the hinge.
If you have to buy a new hinge, get a genuine GM hinge & spring, they're still available!

Thanks for the PN's. I just ordered a set through GMpartsdirect.com

The LH hinge was $13 more than the RH one, I wonder if they're a little harder to find (not as many left)?

A little expensive, but I've needed new hinges for years. Maybe my hood will lay flat without my help now

Are these #'s for the whole assembly or did you have to resuse your old springs?

This will be the first "classic" parts I've bought from them, but I've bought a few things for my silverado from them and shipping was fairly quick. They're prices are *usually* a good bit lower than a dealer, but then the slap ya with about $10 shipping for each item, but if you don't live in NC, no tax, so it could be a wash I'll usually call our local dealer first with the PN's (they won't take orders over the phone, so I just call and ask for the prices) then compare to GMPD and they're usually a good bit cheaper. Normally, the dealer has to order stuff anyway, so you've got to wait anyway.

Re: hood hinge? can't get her aligned

Just talked to the local dealer they can't pull a picture of them to see if the spring comes with it but the prices are $99.00 for LEFT and $78.00 RIGHT.
I'll buy the powder coated ones off E-bay for $99.00 before I pay that much.

LMC price in the summer book is $39.95 each. without springs.
Spring kit has both springs in it for $19.95.
So $60.00+ shipping from LMC.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: hood hinge? can't get her aligned

Andy, that's why I used GMpartsdirect.com. I paid $131 SHIPPED and shipping was $22 of that. I've read too many horror stories on here about the aftermarket stuff. This should be a "one time" buy for me. Certain things I'll cheap out on, but good hood hinges aren't one of them. Hopefully I'll get another 40 years out of 'em.

The aftermarket hood hinges I have seen seem inferior.I haven't used a set and would probably buy GM since I have heard bad about the aftermarket ones.

Thanks! I can't wait to tear it apart again (seriously)

Got my hinges today... DEFINITELY NOS. Although I was hopeful, I had a feeling they were "hinges only," which they were... I couldn't find springs listed on GMpartsdirect.com.

Are the 73-87 springs exactly the same (I have no idea, just throwin' that out there.)

Soooo..... who sells GOOD hood springs?

So is L/H and R/H as viewed from Drivers seat or from facing the front of the engine?

Thanks,
