Big Block Fuel line / Filter Pics at Carb?

Well After Mounting my Fuel Filter behind the mechanical pump and running into fuel starving / Vapor lock issues. (which I knew what the problem was caused from thanks to a previous post by Longhorn Man) I am Shopping around for Replacments after the pump. I would like something that looks good since I am trying to clean u[p the engine compartment, as well as works so here are a few pics and questions.

I have a q-jet does that take 3/8 or 5/16 npt?

Is the outlet on the fuel pump (stock mechanical) 3/8 npt

Should I remopved the q-jet incarb filter if I am going to run another one.

As always the help is apreceated.

What I want is something like this.

ahaha, i JUST went through this. My setup is a fuel filter BEFORE the fuel pump, and there is a mini filter INSIDE the qjet. I went and bought some hardline from napa with the fittings on the ends and just bent them how i wanted em... Nice hardlines... It was 6 bucks for the hardline with the fittings. THey are 3/8 fittings on the end on the pump and carb by the way...

it's not a good idea to put the filter before the pump. It reduces the pressure more than it has to be (it's already at negative pressure as compaired to atmosphere pressure) and the more you drop the pressure, the lower the boiling point is... which can cause, or agrivate vapor lock conditions.

Yup, I Learned this from LHM After I installed mine before the pump and it caused problems between second and third at W/O throttle and it may be the cause of another problem I am having while slowing down which is why I am on this mission.

(pic1) current filter

(pic2) current fuel line I want to replace.

Re: Big Block Fuel line / Filter Pics at Carb?

I cut the metal fuel-line as it comes up from the fuel pump just in front of the passenger-side head and installed a metal in-line filter. I also took the small filter out of the carburator.

I did it a couple years ago and it is working fine.

Why did you take the filter out at the carb?

My 71 has the filter located before the fuel pump. Same with the 81 i bought....

Re: Big Block Fuel line / Filter Pics at Carb?

That is a good question.

It probably would have been fine to put a new small filter in the carb, but to me the pumice type filter looked to be awful restrictive.

I think it was back in '76 I did the same thing on my '72 GMC and it worked great so I figured it would too on my '71 Chevy.

I thought it might not be good to double filter. Sounds like it works ok with it out.

thanks.

You are right. Had a buddy once with a BB that didn't run like we thought it might...the culprit...7 fuel filters. Yep you read that right. I'd never heard of using more than one and now I know why.

Re: Big Block Fuel line / Filter Pics at Carb?

On my blazer I run an inline metal filter BEFORE the mechanical fuel pump and a 3/8" steel line all the way to the carb. Factory Q-jet filter was removed. It's been working fine for 4 years.

The general "rule of thumb" is the you run a filter after a mechanical pump.
You run a filter before an electric pump, which should be mounted as close to the tank as possible.

I would bet it has to do with the style of filter and how much it filters for restriction purposes. Mine Idols great and under normal driving runs ok. But, at wide open Throttle after second gear the engine starts to bog down from vapor lock. I even have a carter mechanical which flows a bit more then stock. If I had an electric (like Kelsfine69, nice setup btw) I'm sure it would be fine. I just don't want to go that route right now.

Re: Big Block Fuel line / Filter Pics at Carb?

A BB definitely needs 3/8 fuel lines. I would get rid of all the 5/16s lines & small fittings.
Next I would get rid of all that rubber hose. Steel lines with open bends is better and steel braided with aircraft fittings is best.
If you have a qjet, you can run the longer fuel inlet that uses a long filter for much better filtering & flow.
