Pitman and Idler arms
Hey guys:
What are the signs of worn pitman and/or idler arms? Can you check them when the front end is up on the jack stands? Thanks

Yes. For the pitman arm move the steering column back & forth a little. Watch the joint in the arm. There should be no lost motion. For the idler, grab the right wheel & pull from side to side. Ther should be no up & down play. Grab the center link & try to pull up & down, or use a pry bar. There should be vno up & down movement.

Thanks for reply. When I said the front end is up on the jack, I failed to mention the front end is all apart!. I am rebuilding the front end therefore there is no wheel or tire, as a matter of fact no A-arms to grab!.

Depending on the rebuild kit you buy it may come with both. The kit i got from CPP came with one, just can't remember which.

You can clamp the stud in a vise. The stud should tightly & have no back & forth movement

If it is already apart just go ahead and replace them they dont cost that much.The extra piece of mind is worth it.
