My 81 project build.

This will probably be a slow bumpy road. I'm slowly learning the whole paint and body thing as well as tweaking my fabrication skills.

Unfortunately I don't have any original pics. The truck started life as a 1981 custom deluxe.

I removed the puny 250 straight six after a good overheating and transplanted a 350.

Here are the oldest pics I really have. Kinda hard to see but you get the idea...

don't mind the blazer tailgate band in that picture, that was just from a different thread were I was showing it.

Re: My 81 project build.

Yesterday I added an 87(?) burban quad headlight setup, and sport bumper.

There are just too many lights on the front of the truck now, I need to figure out something a little different.

Re: My 81 project build.

Ok, so after much research... I decided to do the AOL setup. But, I don't have the dough to buy the ART aol kit... BUT//// after checking out the setup N2TRUX has, I decided to purchase the firestone sport rite kit... 2320 model number. Actually, I got them used through craigslist for a REALLY good price. THis kit looks just like the ART kit... Ok, now I'm rambling... Anyways, thats going on as soon as it arrives. Also got a lead on some bags locally as well as an air tank all for a good price.

Here's the firestone kit

And here's N2TRUX set up.

Looks kinda familiar. Now I don't know how similar they actually are, but it should work for what I want to do... on a budget.

Re: My 81 project build.

Make sure the bag is rated to handle the weight. Beyond that, it looks good to me. What you doing for a C-notch?

Re: My 81 project build.

Well, I though about using some pipe for a weld in notch like what you've got. Might even break down and buy a bolt in...

advice?

Re: My 81 project build.

So my progress is really slow. Always got something goin on. Last night I removed the spring and bump stop from the right side of the truck to get a feel for it.

As for the rear I'm still really struggling with whether or not to buy a bolt in notch or weld my own little c. I feel pretty good about my welding small stuff, but something that major makes me nervous.

Anyhow, here's some pics. This is with stock everything, just no springs. Taking out the bump stops got it like 2.5 inches lower. I was pleased.

Re: My 81 project build.

Man, I'm really not sure.

I kinda wanted a gunmetal grey metalflake, but I'm leaning towards black as well cause of the the way this truck was done

So I'm not sure. I don't ever have the time to get anything done, so I'm sure I'll change my mind again before I get there

Re: My 81 project build.

The hinges are from a Buick. I don't know what year, but there were lots of them. I actually decided not to use them. Tired of messing with them.

The marker was upside down cause that was all I had at the time, and had to make due. I changed it out, but still plan to replace them anyways.

Re: My 81 project build.

Not now, I can get some thursday though... thats the only day I get home before dark.

And just to make everyone aware, this is gonna be an UberCheap build. No corners cut, but will be done as cost conscious as possible. So stay tuned! May help those with no dough like me!

thats cool all i've got is long beds also but thats because the shortys tend to ride a little rougher. my buddies always ask why i put so much money into a long bed, cause its different no one builds lwb's and they ride real nice.
