engine options

I hope to really get crankin' on my truck soon. It has a built 305 in it now from one of the previous owners which I'm not real excited about. It's got an eldebrock intake and holley carb. That's about all I know about it. It doesn't run great and it has a funny tick that I haven't been able to track down so I'm going to take it to someone who can figure it out. If it needs a lot of work on it, I'd rather just get something else to put in it. I like the idea of a 6 banger because it's different from all the 350s. I'd love to have a big block but I'm on a stricter budget than that. So, here are the questions...

1) If I go the 6 route, should I look for a 292 or what? I'd like it to be a good driver with a little kick.

2) If I decided to go the 350 route, will the intake match up? I'd rather do something different honestly, but it may be the cheapest route.

Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Re: engine options

If you're on a budget, stick with the sb. Depending on how strick your budget is you can use the crank I know for sure out of the 305 in a 350 block.

Re: engine options

The 250 is kinder on the gas budget and you can get respectable power from them. The 292 will cost more to build and drink gas like a SBC,if not worse.I love the motor, but being truthful.I want a 292 just for giggles. But,it won`t save money. Can`t beat a SBC for cheap.I never liked a 305.They came along too late for me to pay any attention to them. There`s just too many 350s out there to be fooling with a 305,IMO.

Re: engine options

A good 350 is probably the cheap and easy route. My crate engine was $2050 for the 300hp long blk w/ balancer. You should be able to find a good used one for much less. If your 305 is a pre-87 then the intake, carb, accessories, etc.. should tranfer if needed. That is provided that you get a pre-87 350. Good luck with your choice.

Re: engine options

Man, I would love to have a 400 sb. I don't know though. I thought I had heard as well that you weren't supposed to bore a 400 that much because the walls are already so thin. You might want to check that out.
