1961 Chevy question
Hello,
I'm picking up my first restoration project tomorrow. I'll be flying to Denver to pick it up and then driving her back home to KC. It is a 1961 3/4 ton with 4 speed on the floor and a 327 under the hood. What do you think would be the average crusing speed? I don't want to run her too hard through Kansas, but do you think 65-70 mph would be about right? I'm just trying to figure how long it will take. Thanks in advance and for any other input. Depends on the 4th-gear ratio and rearend gears (probably 3.73, maybe 4.11?)
I'd guess you should plan on more like 55-60mph |

Im only willing to drive about 55-60 in my truck ('65 305V6 3 speed) Thats about as high as it will go unless i feel like winding it up high

My 60 will cruise along at 60

my 65 does best at 50-55.
It was a different time when these were built- radials, interstates were a few years off... |

Gears are most likely 4.56, but could be 4.10. Another part of the equation is tire diameter. With 30" tires and 4.56 gears 60 mph will be about 3,000 rpm. I would rum 60, which is what most of the semis are running now. So you won't be getting passed by everybody!

Sixty sounds about right. If by chance the axles have been changed out for newer ones, you could 3.73's or higher, you can run 65-70. If they are original, you probably won't have any higher gears than 4.10. 4th gear will be 1 to 1 no matter what. Good luck and have a safe trip! Can't wait to see the pics!

You guys were right. I averaged around 55-60 all the way from Denver to KC. It took me 11 1/2 hours. Everything went well though and there were no problems. I'm so glad to be home. The truck is fantastic! I'll post some pictures in a day or two.
