Suggestions? Economy build

The truck is a 68 C-20 lwb.

I need to finish repairing the frame stiffened area and then I wnat to rebuild the suspension.

What I have:
Stock springs
Truck arms (a bit fugly, but fixable)
Complete front suspension (less sway bar) from an 84 C-20
Set of acceptable (for now) 16" rims & tires.
$2000 to spend

I would like to get a more "car like" stance and good ride/handling and want to be able to enhance things later without tearing it back to frame again.

What is the best use of the money I have to spend?

Re: Suggestions? Economy build

Do you want to keep the C-20 suspension and get a smooth ride too? Your going to need to soften the ride somehow. That means soft shocks and/or soft tires. If you have a high load rated tire it's probably going to have a stiff sidewall so you need to find a tire with a slightly lower profile and less of a load rating.

Gas charged shocks will add to the firmness, so consider large fluid dampened shocks.

Re: Suggestions? Economy build

Here is a fast laundry list .. is this a good way to spend $2k?

Spidles $360

Bag, shocks, etc. $1000

Compresser (2 wheel) $400

Adjustable track bar $70

So, that is about $1900, leaving $100 to start the fund for "stuff you need that isn't included."

I can run the rear of schrader valves or (if this works?) run the rear and front each as a unit. I want some adjusability, but it doesn't need to be extream.

Re: Suggestions? Economy build

A new question arrises as I move along --

While waiting for the money that is going to pay for the things above (it's on the way, but they won't say when.. lol) I am continuing to pick at getting the frame restored and ready.

As you can see in the picture above: I pulled the crossmember that the shocks mount to and I have since removed the snubber and the lower bracket for that crossmember on the right side.

Once I get the same done on the left side I will be ready to get the next crossmember and the frame stiffeners out. Once I get rid of the rust I am going to have a bit less frame left right over the rear end than I want. The compromised area is fairly small and is all in the area that you remove when you install a c-notch so I think that will solve that problem.

I can get some bulk steel and make new frame stiffeners but I note that with notches in place the lower brackets to the center crossmember will be history.

I'm going to go poke arond looking at pictures to get some ideas, but I'll ask anway -- when you notch a frame -- How do you handle shock mounts for the rear and do I need a crossmember here for latteral stiffness?

yes there is the issue was no one knew you were associated with air ride. We were not informed of the account being made by anyone from Air Ride, so it appeared as though you were breaking the rules. Your account will be fixed by Josh this evening. We do apologize, but anyone could sign up as a reseller and post the same items, without being associated with the Air Ride account.

Thanks
Liz

XII. It is against our policy for someone to post a complaint about a members price on whatever they are selling. If you don't like the price then skip it. Let it drop to the bottom on its own. They (potential buyers) will figure it out, why nobody is jumping on that particular item.
XIII. If you are a long time member, act like one. Lead by example and assist other newer members rather then attacking them. We look upon our veteran members to use this opportunity to teach the newer members the appropriate message board usage.

Jon- We appreciate your understanding as well as your patience in getting your account updated. Just so you know the site went in for it's annual check up this past weekend, and the Admins are still chasing bugs. Your name being pink happened to be one of them.

Thanks for supporting the forum, and just as important thanks for spending time here. Tony used to drop in quite often, but he's too busy for us these days...
