how much to pay for 79 or 86 crossmember and all

how much is reasonable for a 79 or 86 front crossmember with all control arms, spindles, tie rods what else do i need? 1 junkyard wants $200 for the 86 (will it even work?)and they will pull it for me. another said i could have the 79 for $75, but i would have to pull the engine. than get the crossmember out myself. that might be an all day job. i cant imagine do that in the junkyard with hand tools.

Ride around and look for a junker.Put an ad in Craig's list.
Get a battery sawzall and cut off what you don't want!
Those are reasonable prices.You said it yourself---It's the difference in labor.
I think 70 and up will work.
If you were closer,I have 10 of these trucks!
Our hobby is expensive and labor intensive!

I bought a front suspension/brakes set-up from a wrecking yard 75 GM truck to swap to my 68. From wheel/tire to wheel/tire w/them removing everything where I wanted it cut/removed set me back $200. I got a-arms, spindles, rotors, calipers, mstr.cyl/booster, hard lines, flex lines, & prop valve. I even grabbed as many clips, screws, & specialty retainers as I could to make things easier.

I used the calipers, booster, & master cyl as my core deposits toward new 'correct' parts for a 71-72 truck. I also used the 5-lug front wheels as temp rollers until I got a set of ralleys & now they're spares.

I had them trim the rear brake line from the prop valve w/just enough excess for me to trim it square, flare it, & couple it to my original rear line under the cab.

I kept my stock front "clip" on my 63 project. I then ordered all the parts for a 75 that I needed for a heavy half-ton setup.

Upper and Lower Ball-joints (Will bolt and press in to 63 and up control arms)
75 Drop Spindles for Heavy Half Rotors (Fit Ball-joints)
6 Lug rotors from CPP
Had some calipers and caliper mount stuff lying arround
Bought a new bearings kit and bolted it all together.
Just have to get custom tie-rod end adapter to use inner 60's with outer 70's

Just a different idea, since you would be taking off and replacing a majority of the parts anyways I would think.

so $200 sounds reasonable right? i'm gonna try to haggle down maybe 125 ? if it don't piss him off.

I paid $100 for my '75 hub to hub,with me removing it,was close enough to power so the impact gun was a must
was already jacked up,no motor,no hood
1 1/2 hrs to unbolt and get it to the tailgate
another 1 1/2 hrs to get it into the bed
LOL lots of tractors and stuff,just no one home on the day I came to get it

A friend of mine just paid $100.00 for a complete front frame section and tilt column from an early 80's truck. We found a truck in the yard with the engine already out. We removed the front clip and cut the frame at the fire wall with a portable oxy/acel. torch.
I paid $200.00 for a complete late 70's truck. I pulled the front suspension to use on my 64 and traded the rest of the truck for other parts i needed.

it is whatever you can get it for. everyone has different values on junk, as it appears to them, others think it is gold.. if $200.00 sounds reasonable to you and it is in fair condition buy it but don't insult the guy. if it is to expensive for you keep looking. It depends on how much time that you want to spend looking and how big a hurry that you are in

Not really since it's already removed. You're buying from a salvage yard, not a retail store so there should be allot of wiggle room in the pricing. Don't be afraid to offer less than they are asking. Believe me, they want to sell it and people aren't exactly lined up at the door for it. If they don't negotiate, then there will be a big sign saying so; disregard it.

I paid $200 for a complete crossmember minus rotors w/ master cylinder and powersteering gearbox. This was on a half price day at picknpull

I paid $125 for my stuff out of a 74 1/2 ton hub to hub. I think its all in where you go. I you do pull it out yourself its really not too bad if you leave everything on front, like arms, wheels etc
If you do end up haggling try and get more parts out of it that you will need or could use... the more the better

It took me 3hrs to get it all done,1 1/2 if i had a faster way of getting it into the back of my DD
I think 200 is fair ,haggle for the the little things that might nickle and dime you ,ps box,prop valve,maybe even a pair of rallies to roll it on

Ya its kinda like other stuff you just take your chances, but most yards will exchange them if they dont work. I have bought boosters out of salvage yards and havent had any problems with them
