283 with 3sp OD
Im pulling this out of my 67 CST. Its a 283 with a 3sp overdrive trans. I have no idea what kind of shape the engine or trans is in. I do know the engine runs like crap.
I was going to use this truck as a driver, so I did start to do a little work on getting it running better. I had the carb rebuilt by Joe's in Lynnwood (very reputable folks) Previous owners buddy had tried messing with it..ugh. Anyway other stuff came up so there she sits. I did drive it a bit. Like I said, runs crappy. I do not know if the OD is working, its not hooked up. 500 bucks for everything, engine, trans, aftermarket floor shifter set up and the original OD handle and cable. Ive had several PM's asking for this or that. This is a package deal only, I will not split any of it off. And Im sorry, but no shipping. Come and get it or maybe we can work out a meet somewhere thats not too far off the map =) Im firm on all of this. Oh and no trades either, I have way too much stuff as it is...LOL. Thanks for looking. Just looked at the pic of the engine...That pic is before I had the carb rebuilt. Last edited by CG; 08-28-2008 at 01:09 PM. Reason: Just adding a little bold hightlighting =) |

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
You are breaking my heart!..........no shipping.
If you change your mind I would want the trans and over drive stuff, cost to much to ship the engine. Thanks, Steve |

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
Im sorry guys, shipping big stuff like this is a giant hassle and I just dont have the patience to deal with that. And I also realize selling this as a package makes it even more difficult, but thats the way Ive decided to do it. If it doesnt sell I would rather have it all together.

Put me in line for the overdrive if you decide to separate.

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
One TTT for this one.
I was pretty sure it was going to be a hard sell this way. But I really like the combo, and this way if it doesn't sell Ill still have it for something down the road. I wont have to say...dang I wish I still had that OD trans. It would be really cool with this little 283... Last edited by CG; 08-30-2008 at 12:13 PM. |

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
Thats the highly sought after and rare OD made by Saginaw (casting #Q10 or R10 if I remember right) for GM and used in late 65 through 69 cars and trucks. Identified by the 7 bolt shifter case cover. This tranny is a fully sychronized HD 3 speed with the .70 OD gear Borg Warner overdrive. The earlier and fairly common GM BW OD units used from 55-mid 65 was a 4 bolt side cover and did not have a sychronized 1st gear. These OD equipped vehicles also came from the factory with 4:11 rear ends. I have several of these later OD's and I recently restored my 56 Bel Air and used the later OD with my column shifter and a 3.55 rear end. Very nice road gears this way and it shifts very smooth and quiet. In essense, it is much like a 2 speed over/under as you can run through 6 gear ratio's if you use the od. I haven't fuel mileage tested my car yet but another 67 283 3 speed OD C10 longbox a friend has had since new gets around 18mpg at 65mph. Parts are scarce and command a high price on eBay.
One other thing I have read about was this OD is the tail housing and internal shaft will work on a Borg Warner 4 speed. In the 60's some guys would run very low ratio rear ends i.e 4:56, 4.88, 5:13's for drag racing and still drive their car home at highway speeds with the OD. Mark

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
Most were the 3 spd Saginaw with the Borg Warner overdrive bolted to the rear case. There were some Muncies and possibly another trans. out there, but the most popular and reliable, from what I have heard and read about, are the Saginaws. The 4 bolt side cover was the earlier non synchronized transmissions and the 7 bolt side cover units are the most sought after-they are synchronized. GM stopped putting these o/d units in trucks in 1969. I'm not sure the year they started putting the synchro. units in trucks. I have one out of a '69 truck. They're still out there and I've seen many on ebay. Parts are hard to come by, but they're there, just takes time to find them.
CG, you won't have any problems getting rid of that set up if you ever decide to sell it. If you were on the east coast, I would have been all over that one!

Wow, guys thanks for all that info. You make it sound like I could get the bigger bucks on just the trans if I stick it on ebay.
Engine and trans are still in the truck so I have no pictures. |

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
That tranny complete and in working condition with the cable, harness, relays, and kickdown bracket are worth way more than the 283 is. Also you need to include the carb as it also has a special paddle shaft to mate to the kickdown switch. My opinion is it's worth what your asking for the whole set up right now. But shipping costs anymore are also a big deal. I paid $400 for my first 69 tranny without accessories and spent another $400 rebuilding it with NOS pieces. Good luck.

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
My 71 C30 Longhorn has this OD in it with a 360. It gets 14 MPG in town if don't hot rod it and 16 to 18 on the road if I drive 70 or less.

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
CG, By the time I paid for shipping on my trans., I had about $400.00 in it, and then I put another $250.00in it rebuilding it. I agree with HOTFUN, if you sell the trans. alone as a package deal with the cable, harness, switches & carb, I believe you'll get the price you were asking for the engine/trans. combo. Throw it up on the board here and see what happens. You've got the best selling market right here for this jewel. Someone just might be able to arrange transporting it by other board members by using the transportation forum.

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
thatz a nice set-up.. i have one that came out of a 1967 Chevelle station wagon.
fully sync, u can have 6 total gears.. go thru 1st gear, let off the gas, it changes to the high side.. gas it, then change to 2nd...do the same thing... if i were closer i would consider this for a spare..

Re: 283 with 3sp OD
OD is great in these old trucks. Early 90s, my son bought a 71 SWB fat side fom a guy, whose mother was the original owner. He built a 288, approx. 9:0 to 1 comp, RV type cam, split duration/lift, degreed the cam, played with the cam timing, HEI ign, mildly massaged ports for flow speed, balanced assy. Roch. 2GC, from a Pontiac 389/400, IIRC, Small diameter headers full duals.
He hooked this up with the manual 4 spd OD from the later Chevy trucks, the one I think that was a Chrysler design. He had 3:08 gears, 235-75R-15" tires, hubaps, tonneau cover. Claimed to have gotten 20-21 mpg on highway trips. I put the same trans in my 72 GMC camper sp, with a similarly built 305, with a 600 Holley vac sec. 4:10 Dana, 245-75R-16s and would get 17 mpg on the highway. Granted I 'm an OLD GUY, as was the other guy, and we drove judiously. Don |
