Re: i need help

Yep, we need some more info. Also, do you have an electronic distributor.

When you say shuts off. Do you lose all electrical power? Does it shut off like when you run out of fuel?

If it shuts off completely, check your other electrical components like lights, horn, starter, etc. These all would give you clues as to whether it's an ignition problem, batter cable, ignition switch...

Re: i need help

If it just dies like you turn off the ignition, I would guess either something in the HEI distributor or in the ignition module. Electrical short maybe? Check all of your connections at all of the ignition system.

Man, we're trying to help, but you're going to have to give us some more info.. There's too many things that can cause a vehicle to die.

By supplying us with a just a little more information, we can maybe give you some better answers. As it is we're just guessing..

Anyway, here's another bump for you.

Re: i need help

first off when it dies remove gas cap and see if it goes woosh if so you need a new gas cap vented this time// a second possible cause is fuel straioner in tank is filled with crud or you have a clogged up fuel filter in the carb

Re: i need help

If its a fuel problem, you will get some hesitation before it dies, are you experiencing that? Otherwise, I would still say its in the electrical.

Re: i need help

Very likely it is in the ignition. Fuel problems rarely if ever act this way. Start checking all the wiring connections positve and ground on the ignition. Make sure they are connected tight and no corrosion.
For further help here your going to need to provide a little bit better description of the problem and makeup of your vehicle. ie; Year, Make & model, engine size, type of distributor whether it's points or electronic, if it's an Hei, any modifications that have been done like... stock or performance upgrades, how many miles on the vehicle. Did this just start happening all of a sudden or after you worked on something.

When was the last time a tune up was done?

Get my drift here? Your question is far too vague for anyone here on the board to give you any kind of help or even a place to start, other than what I said about wires and connections. Good luck.

God Bless, Terry

Re: i need help

I remember my dad's 69 Camaro would die when going down the road for what seemed like no reason. After weeks of fustration ot was finally tracked down to one of the wires going down to the starter shorting out against exaust. It might be worth checking out. Good Luck.

I had an old car do the same thing and it was a bad coil. Take it in and have it checked at a parts store.

Re: i need help

My truck will die when it runs out of gas, then if I put some in it it will run fine again until I run out then it just dies again. Strange!

Re: i need help

If it has a HEI, those are also prone to having the module on them go bad, they can have a situation where the module will run fine until it gets hot, then it will quit, it will then cool, and run until hot again.

Also you need to check the wiring connections going to the coil and cap.

Re: i need help

Module has already been suggested.

We're running out of guesses and dmasta hasn't provided us with any more info.

Dude, have you figured it out yet??? We're starting to repeat ourselves...
