guage needle removal
I ran a search but couldnt find any info on removing the needle off of the guages. Since I have the dash off of the truck, I might as well get to painting it.

IN most cases the needle can be just pulled forward as it is just kind of crimped onto the shafts. However, if you are going to just paint the needle, you micht consider getting a large piece of paper and cutting one slit to the center - then push it onto the shaft between the needle and the housing. Use a piece of tape to close this slit then you are ready to paint the needle. I kind of prefer this method. Good luck---Huck

I would be very very careful with this......i tried this about 2-3 weeks ago. The needles came off fine, but the post that runs through the middle of the gage broke and come off too....
These older parts seem to magically "bond" themselves together after 15-20 years.....LOL! |

I was thinking of doing some real carbon fiber for the background (not those sissy sticker stuff) too. I'll take my chances taking the off. jay

They do make a special tool that is like a small clamp with a grove in the bottom for the shaft and the screw portion has a very small pin to push pin out the hole in the needle. Ed ke6bnl

When you remove the needle from the gas gauge, note the position of the needle , because there is no mechanical stop for it like the speedometer. If it doesn't read right when you hook it back up, you may have to pull and reposition the needls.

They do make a special tool. BUT, I have a more economical way, use a fork position under gauge and gently apply pressure, it will push up and pop the needle right off. I have done countless gauges for the new INDIGLO stuff on the newer cars and trucks.
THE KEY, is warm the truck up to operating level, draw a diagram of exactly where each needle pointer is at idle. Then when done with gauges before installing needles. Warm truck up to operating level again. While truck is idling re-install needles in exact position as before. If you do not do this your gauges will never read right again. You will be shootin in the dark. Good luck.
