Question Questions about exhaust

As you see in my signature I have a 6.2L diesel. I am wanting to run 3" pipe just behind the cab then up thru the bed like small stacks. Problem is not many people can bend 3" pipe. So i called NAPA and they carry 3" flex pipe @$11.50/ft. Would I be better off just buying what I need in 3" pipe and get some flex pipe and take it to a shop and have them install it or just go to a shop that can actually bend the 3" and let them do the install. The only shop that could bend 3" said I would be lucky to get out of there for $250-300! I didnt think there is that much work into bending pipe and running it thru a hole I would have already have cut for them. From what i could tell, there will be (1) 90* bend per pipe and then whatever they have to do to attach it to the collector. And the same guy quoted me $75 for a 7' section and Ill need at least 2 sections. What are yalls thought on this? Ill take any ideas/recommendations/gripes/complaints about it. TIA

Steve,

I made my own exhaust system on the '81. I bought mandrel-bent 3" elbows from JC Whitney and 3" pipe from Summit racing. Pretty cheap that way. I can't remember how much, but the 3" elbows were like $15 or something, and I think the pipe isn't much more than that for a 4' stick.

Casey

Steve,

I just checked Summit's website. 3" x 4' pipe is $13.39, part # SUM-640030

3.5" x 4' pipe is $14.99, part # SUM-640035

Cool

That sounds alot better that way. I would still pay a shop to do the welding, but I will go ahead and buy the piping myself. 1 question, to be able to mate the pipe to the collector, did you cut the flange off the old pip and retro fit it to the 3" pipe? Or can I buy a flange? I really appreciate your help Casey!

What are your thoughts on propane injection? I might be able to get a 30gl. propane tank from an S-15 truck and I would like to make a kit for injection on my intake. Any ideas?

You can get 3-hole flanges & have them welded to the exhaust pipe & then mate the 3" pipe to the collectors. Most of the major manufacturers carry them(Hooker for sure).

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Steve...call Paul (the owner) at Tribe Automotive on Samuell Blvd in Dallas (don't have the number handy) and ask him if he can bend 3" pipe...he has a bender and if he can...tell him I sent you and what you need....he's a good guy that doesn't rape pricewise....he's done work for me before and was very reasonable....

I had adapters machined that allow 2.5" pipes to be bolted directly to the stock manifolds using 2.5" three bolt collector flanges that I also got from JC Whitney. The 2.5" pipes then turn into 3" pipes.

Do your stock pipes come together in a single collector, or do you have duals already?

Propane injection only works with turbo'ed engines. On an n/a, the LP will actually displace diesel fuel. There's not enough air to burn the fuel that's already present. A turbo will force feed enough air to burn all the fuel, and the LP will then make that burn more efficient.

I've heard nitrous works with n/a diesels, but I haven't seen anyone try it, myself.

Kelly, I think I will wait till closer to spring to do it because of the upcoming holidays and all, but I will give the guy a call. I was frustrated with it yesterday that I instead went to the local 4x4 shop here in Plano by my job and spent some money on a new steering stabilizer shock and some offroad lights.

Casey, I was reading online yesterday at work about the propane injection and there were some places that said theirs will work with Turbo engines or N/A engines, but at a whopping price of $500-600! You dont happen to have any extra tubos laying around do ya?
