Thumbs up Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

O.K. so many of you know I drive a yellow '47 International every day to work and various shoots, however, it is time to beef up the old 310-incher with some hot new parts, mainly because I am in a HP race at work, (number envy, its a long story.)

So editor Tommy Lee is packing a '64 Corvette with a Dart headed 350, it makes about 287 horsepower at the rear wheels (dynoed)

The yellow IH is packing a 305ho that is punched out to 310 cubic inches (0.030 overbore, Comp 440 lift cam, 10.5 to 1 flat tops and iron 58cc heads. Edelbrock intake and a 500cfm carb.

I am taking it down the street today to get a baseline number.

I am going to install a set of High Velocity Heads, sbc aluminum heads, 175cc intake runners, 2.02/1.60 valves and beehive springs along with a new vortec style manifold and a Holley 650cfm carb.

Hopeing to at least get 200 the first go around, but we will have to wait and see. I'll be sure to post the results in the morning.

I'm really partial to old Cornbinders....

Yeah, we're gonna be watching to see how this turns out. Good luck. Hope you don't "blow" it...

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

well, I saw how Tommy's Corvette did, made me sad. Rumor is these heads will make the truck hit 300 at the rear wheel or so I am told.

probably the combination of the new heads, bigger carb, better intake, aluminum roller rockers, Weiand aluminum water pump and carb spacer.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

I took a summer class at UTI a few years back and the last day or two they let us play around, well I put my 94 9C1 Caprice on the rollers, 265 with a K&N FIPK kit and and flowmasters added intot he factory duals. I was shocked a bit, then realized what the flywheel numbers should be and what that motor would do in a car that was a thousand pounds lighter (4500 lbs or so in the caprice), then I wasn't so upset! Dyno's don't lie isn't 100% true, so do not get too down on yourself since there are a lot of variables on a chasis dyno.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

I'd like to see the 305 put up some big numbers. I've got one in my S10 Blazer with ported, and port matched H.O.heads, 9.5:1 Speed Pro pistons, Crane cam, roller tipped rockers, Action plus intake, Mallory distributor, Street Avenger 570 carb, Hedman shorty headers, and true duals that puts about 250 to the wheels. Propels my 3800# suv to a 2 sec 60ft and a 14.90 1/4 mile at 94 mph! Not too shabby for a mildly built 305. The only reason I didn't go more radical was because it's my everyday driver. And it gets 16mpg in town. I'd guess 300hp from a 305 would be pretty easy to accomplish, and 400+ from a 305 stroker.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

thats good to know, I am going to a DynoJet which is suppose to be 20 percent higher than a Mustang. Not real sure though.

my truck weighs 2685 with 3/4 of a tank of fuel.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

O.K. so I went to the Dyno and I am sad, i feel that I have been touched wrongly.

The best run up to 4 was the red line 145 horsepower, OUCH!

We found that the throttle pedal was not pulling the carb to wide open throttle.

AFter making the adjustments we hit 175 horsepower and 242 on torque.

I was sad but with the new top end and maybe a FI kit later I should be able to hit 300. We'll have to see, I am about to begin the teardown.

Here is the dyno sheet, you can see the difference between 3/4 throttle and full throttle.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

I suggest keeping the 500 cfm carb. The 650 will bog it down at lower rpms. It might make more peak HP, but throttle response and driveability will be better with the 500.

With all things considered, 175 at the rear wheels with a 305 is pretty darn good. That means your touching the 250-275 hp mark at the flywheel with accessories. If the engine were on a dyno with no accessories, it would probably be in the 300-315 range.

I doubt my mild cammed 350 would do that well.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, where did you have the dyno done and about how much does it cost? I'm interested in having my truck dynoed just for the fun of it.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

He told me I would be making a ton more at the crank but I have the three biggest power killers

700R4
12 Bolt truck rear
Massive 20-inch rollers with big tires.... oooppppss

He's right, the 12 bolt doesn't hurt you too much. What kinda stall are you running, they will eat up the power on a dyno.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

I am not quite for sure, I will have to try and find the dyno report for my trans, it is a TCI deal.

He said the 12 bolt WAS hurting me.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

It does hurt you compared to a 10 bolt sure, but it's not going to suck up 20+ rwhp. On 4th gen Camaro's 12 bolts only take maybe 10-15 rwhp to spin up. The wheels take up a lot of power, I lost about 10 just switching from factory 16's to chrome 18's, so I bet 20's are even worse. The biggest culprit is your auto and whatever stall you are running.

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

yeah, I know, just means I will have to make more power at the crank. The dyno guy told me I might be losing as much as 30 percent. Thats O.k I look good doing it.

What's important is do you enjoy driving the truck?

But seriously, that's some nice power for a 2,700lb truck!

2.2L S-10's only make about 88-90 hp at the rear wheels (no I'm not joking ) and they weigh 3,100lbs (2wd reg cab) and up.

My 67 weights about 3,700lbs and I'd be lucky if my late 70's 350 makes 200 hp at the flywheel

Just drop one of these in instead. You may need to beef up the 700R4 for it though...

Re: Going to the Dyno at 6:00 (sure I'll be dissapointed)

Ya think? I would rather keep my short block, it new, clean, runs great, just a few bolt-ons is all.

aluminum heads, new intake, bigger carb, roller rockers, new pushrods and an aluminum water pump should do the trick.

Yeah, just givin' you an "ass kickin'" option

Do you have a clutch fan or electric fans? That's good for a couple/few hp as well.
