Rear axle's
I just bought a 68 c20 for my son, i would like a little advice. Which axle is in this truck, "Dana something?" by the glove box it has 4.10 gears. I am also wanting some higher gears to save some fuel.

Don't hold me to this, but it looks like a corporate 10.5" axle. Good luck finding a new gear if it is. If you do find a gear set for it please let me know as I have the same axle in mine

aka HO52 from Eaton. Mine had a 4.57 gearset, and Keep on Trucking is right; you probably won't find new gears for it. I wound up putting in a 3.54 Dana 60 (look for a 1/2T big block donor truck) and have been quite happy with that. After 12 years, maybe it's time to update the speedo drive.....

Yeap it's a HO52. Parts are almost none existent for those. Your best bet would to swap in a Dana 60. You can find these in some newer 3/4 trucks. But you would have to weld some brakects on to it for the trailing arms and panhard bar. Or just swap it over to leaf spring , then you options would be almost endless. It really isn't that hard when you get into it.

If you're up for welding on new brackets I'd recommend the 14 bolt. You can go all the way up through 2008 on that one, and the newer ones (2001 up) had factory rear discs.
Ford sterling or dana 70 rears would work too (and commonly have 3.55's), but the main problem with them is that the hubs stick out so far you'd have to have a very large center cap on your wheels to cover them.

For bolt in ease, MOST big block powered C/20 should have a dana with a 3.54 gear.
As far as bolt in rears, that's as close as you'll be getting. |

A longhorn would have leafs instead of coils. If he wanted to do that kind of fab work, he'd be better off with a 14 bolt rear.

Yes, I think a 700R4 would be a good fit for this truck. They can build those transmissions really good now.
