Greetings from Beaverton, Oregon

I just purchased a 1972 Chevy C10 as a project truck (i.e., it is for projects, and it is a project ). I’m trying to get it running reliably/safely and stop the decomposition (rust). I'd like to restore it someday, given free time and money, but with two young children, that won't happen soon.

I'm finally at a place in life where I can afford to have other people work on my newer vehicles, but I still like to learn and tinker. I’m somewhat mechanically inclined, but I don’t know much about these trucks. I want to learn to do my own work on it. I've already replaced the starter (unexpectedly, in the rain, at a friend's house) and battery and done some other minor things. It's almost to the point I feel safe driving it!

This forum looks like a great resource. I'm also hoping to find a person or network of folks in my area.

Re: Greetings from Beaverton, Oregon

Thanks to all the friendly responses! Sorry to be a stranger to my own thread. Since the moment I started this thread it's been non-stop action on my truck. Like Shaneschevys line, "It's always something".

A couple Saturday's ago, my kids wanted to go for a ride in the truck. The first time they rode in the truck, the starter died. This time, we got our first full tank of fuel, and promptly discovered that the rubber fuel line in the cab, behind the back seat, was fairly decomposed. It couldn't handle the pressure of the expanding gas in the full tank and began to leak all over the cab. That was a mess. but fortunately an easy fix.

Last Friday I drove the truck to work. I got about two miles from my house and the engine just turned off. Shifted it into neutral, tried to start it again. Nothing. I turned onto a side street and called my wife to rescue me. Oh, I also discovered that my hazard signal doesn't work. While I waited, two friendly police officers pulled up behind me and offered to push me into a business center parking lot. Instead of using their car with its beefy bumper blocks, they pushed me by hand. They said that their insurance company is concerned that they might hurt the car they're pushing. Come on, it's an old Chevy pickup, what could get hurt? Anyway, a friendly dump truck driver also pulled over and helped. You meet the nicest people in a broken down Chevy.

I replaced the ignition switch after work, and I was able to get it home. But I'm not convinced that really solved the problem. Now I have an unknown electrical gremlin to worry about. Has anyone done a full wiring replacement? With as many electrical modifications this truck has seen over the years (judging by the number of mysterious non-diagrammed wires running everywhere, and the number of things that don't work), I'm tempted to rip it all out and start from scratch.

The good news is the rattle-can painting is almost done, and it probably won't rust any more over the rainy season. And since I got the carb cleaned up, I can break the rear end loose from a stop, instead of stalling it.
