68 with gold paint
im new to the forums, ive got a 68 c10 stepside with only 20,000 (lightly driven) miles, though its a 6 cylinder i believe a 250??, anyways its got a gold paint job not too bad but i was wondering is it anything special or would it be a mistake getting a newpaint job?

Re: 68 with gold paint
welcome to the forums!
If you can post photos of the inside of the cab, and/or the option sheet in the glove box (SPID) we can tell you if you do have something of interest. There's a chance it is the 50th annv truck. |

Re: 68 with gold paint
heres the interior, and for that rust spot, thats the only big thing thats keeps it from being nearly perfect condition interior wise

Re: 68 with gold paint
Doesn't look to be a 50th model truck, but that is one sweet truck.
Paint doesn't look bad at all for 40 years old, but heck yeah, repaint it if you want it to look a bit cleaner. Very nice truck. Hope you faired well during the little blows.

Re: 68 with gold paint
so...gold was just a color option? nothing special? oh and i also noticed how large the engine bay is, you could fit atleast 3 people in there, anyways whats the biggest engine you can cram in there?

Re: 68 with gold paint
Good lookin' truck. That color gold is kind of the for runner of the modern champaign color that's popular on late model trucks.

Re: 68 with gold paint
Nice truck. Say, that's kind of an odd rust spot on the door, isn't it?

Re: 68 with gold paint
The p.o. must have sweat alot and leaned on the door.I`ve seen then get rust up on the top edge from the driver`s arm.
Metallic gold was a popular car color through the late-60s/early-70s.I really like it.Your truck is a shade off from the`68 50th anniversary models. But mainly, the difference is in the interior with white/gold upholstery.

Re: 68 with gold paint
I would think a special edition would have some more options ,at least it is a big rear window but IMO its almost perfect as is .
41 yrs. old low low milage no rust and a good drive train? Are the brake shoes orginal? If it were me I wouldn't think twice .I needed something to modify or custom I'd find another to alter leave the patina on that rare find alone . In a few years it'll be a half cantury old. |

Re: 68 with gold paint
the original owner, my great uncle worked at a plant just down the road from his house in north louisiana, and my dad and i assumed it was from sweat on the door, we got it with ab 16500, to 17500 miles a few years back, it had sat under a carport for atleast 7 to 8 years without running, the drive train is fairly decent, not really anything wrong with it, three on the tree, handles ok for a non power steering vehicle, the only real modification we made on the engine was by taking off the smog pump and changing the distributor cap. But since its a straight 6 would it be much a shame swapping the engine and setting the 6 aside for a big v8?

Re: 68 with gold paint
oh, and the wood pick up bed was covered with diamond billet metal floor, he did that, its just sitting on the wood, which id guess now is rotted, and the metal flooring is all rusted, the paint in the bed is all scrapped up as well

Re: 68 with gold paint
6 to V8. I tend to know someone else who took a perfectly good running 250, and swapped it out for a 350 (with automatic too)

If you do swap the engine consider the transmission too , I made the trip on one tank of gas ,but I have a 700r4 transmission and I will keep it.The air filter was not new and the carb has some miles on it I cant tell much , I did not tear in to it ,but nothing on it was new. I cant wait to see what I can get with a tune up ,rebuilt card I don't remember if it had electronic ignition on it or not but it will soon and new wires too, the plugs had rust on then. If its a coin toss between originial or new I would leave it alone but if it needs to be upgraded I think the four speed would be easier to live with. Hope this helps. |

highly interested in this color scheme. please post pics with the truck in the sun.
*wiping the drool off my keyboard* we've been trying to figure out what a 50th stepper might have looked like. I'm not saying yours is, but I've got to say that's the 1st I've seen in that color combo on a stepside. mahalo, Jay

Re: 68 with gold paint
SPID says it's 4555AA; Saddle/white. It just may be that the paint looks gold in the pix, instead of being the anniversary gold/white that the '68's had as an option. Saddle, as I remember it, has more brown in it, than gold.

Re: 68 with gold paint
Good observation ChevLoRay, it was painted saddle from the factory and not gold. Saddle is a very light metallic brown color.
