OK, I need help from rear axle gurus...

I am rear axle challenged and my 68 GMC 250 standard with a Dana has been making a clunking sound when I turn. It's mostly on the first turn after sitting for a day or two.

About 6 months ago I replaced the pinion oil seal, removed rear cover and cleaned and replaced the gear oil and cover gasket.

Here's what I have checked for: Loose bed bolts, axle spring bolts, shackles, lug nuts, shocks, etc. all look good.

What I noticed: I lifted the rear tire and pushed and pulled on it and found it had a slight in and out movement. Maybe 1/8th inch movement or slightly more. Could this be it? What's the fix?

Is it a Posi?
Did you put any posi additive in when you refilled it?

I'm not sure about a Dana rear but on the 12 bolt that side to side play is normal, The axel is held in place by a "C" clip and there is some play in it.

Is this a 1500 or a 2500 GMC? (6 or 8 lug wheels)

Re: OK, I need help from rear axle gurus...

Thanx for responses...

The truck is a 68 GMC 1500 series, 3.54 Dana with 10 bolt rear end. No positraction. Not sure what grease I used but I can find out... bought it at Auto Zone.

Now, as I mentioned, I've only noticed the noise only when it's cold and I'm turning.

One other thing I forgot to mention. I have removed the sides of the bed before and haven't rewelded them back to the bed. That's sort of a long shot since I notice it mostly on the first turn and not on subsequent turns.
