signal lights and backup lights?

What are you guys doing for signal and back up lights? I bought some aftermarket headlights that have a built in signal, so I have the front covered. I have the original stop and signals for the rear. I've searched around and it seems a lot are doing the ford tear drops (are they dual perpose stop & signal). I'd just like to hear what you guys have or have seen. I guess if all else fails I can clean up the originals.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I was thinking of some that Lokar advertises. They are LED and do all the required brake, signal & reverse things. They also look like they could be flush mounted in the rear roll pan.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I took a look at the Lokar site, http://www.lokar.com/product-descrip...taillights.htm. Those look like some nice ones. I'd kinda like to stay with the stock brake lights. Instead of the big farm truck signals that I have...do you think some small chrome motorcycle lights (Harley bullet type) would look ok?

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

Ya the Lokar lights look real nice - and come in 2 sizes I believe - but I have not priced them out yet! I bet there are some real nice Harley lights out there. I never thought of that. I am so far from that that it is all but dreaming now.

I am still cleaning and fabricating cab/body mounts, sanding body parts and getting ready to paint the frame.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

The LED bed roll lights (Pro'sPick) are bright and the right height to be seen, but only as a secondary stop/tail light

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I was going to mention the LEd bed roll lights in conjunction with the Lokar LED lights inset into the roll pan. In combination they would not be too obtrusive but would provide good lights.

Anyone know what the Lokar and bed roll lights are selling for off hand?

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm trying to figure out a way to use the stock tail lights for both brakes and turn signals. A guy on another forum said that he wired some old 32 Ford tear drops this way by using diodes. I'm trying to find more information about how to do this, I'll post back what I find out.

I like the "T" lights also, but I havent got that far yet......maybe 32 highboy lights. Those have been over done a bit though.

Good find. I book marked that site and am going to have to spend some time looking at what they have.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I personally wouldn't put this on my '54, but I did buy it for our Tahoe as I thought the 3rd brake light GM intalled on the late 90's trucks/SUV's looked like an after thought.

Here's what happens when your wife uses a drive thru car wash.

Here's the back after the shave....

I still need to install the "Recon" LED. It will match the rear LED tails nicely.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I found these on Ebay. I couldn't get myself to buy them. I just don't think they look right. He also has them in all stainless with the red LED lens. I went with the red s/s set-up.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I think that the tail lights are one of the real personal preference things on the trucks and a guy has to stay with the theme of the truck or they end up looking stuck on.

The stock style housing with Led lights would be ok if they had red lens in them.
If you run 12 V you can swap to 2357 bulbs if you have the sockets for 1157's and that will make the lights quite a bit brighter. Also painting the inside of the housing bright white helps. I did both these things on my 71 after reading about it on another board and it really makes a difference.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

Mr48,

I agree and can confirm your low-buck brightening by painting the inside of the housing bright white. I've also done it on many vehicles and is much better than the silver the manufacturer's use (or usually in my case, "rust")

Another thing is that if you find an old style tail-light that you like but it's only single filament - any local auto part store will have "dual element" pigtails, usually in the "Help" section. It's quite easy to swap them in.

It's what I did with the fronts of mine.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

if you want to redneck it you can just add another element to the rear housings for the signals and it doesn't cost very much

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I installed my lights and they work fine. But the built in signal light are an issue. I did the s10 swap and am running all the s10's wiring. The aftermarket signals are a 2 wire set-up. the s10 has a 3 wire set-up. I can't get them to work. Does anyone know how to convert the 3 wire to a 2 wire?

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I remember seeing a kit at Checker awhile back that was for hooking up a trailer to a truck with three wire set up. Take a look and see if this fits the bill.

Re: signal lights and backup lights?

I used two origional style lights in stainless with LED and turned them sideways and stacked them for twice as much light
and added anothe park turn lamp in the front grill at the bottom of my 53
