Dome Light/Parking Light problems

My '67 K10 is doing something odd, I have front and rear parking lights when I turn the parking lights on, but when I switch the headlights on, the parking lamps in front go out-but the rears still work. I tried a different headlamp switch, but this did not solve the problem. In addition, my dome light does not work-I think it may have a bad ground but I have yet to check into it-the only way that these two problems could be tied together is through that headlamp switch-but like I said, changing it had no effect. Any ideas?

Thumbs up

On all 1967 trucks the parking lights go out when the headlights come on. Have you checked the dome light wiring under the door sill plate and along floor and rear door pillar I would suspect it of being bad.

Paul is right. In 67 and older, the front parking lights were just that...parking lights, not running lights.

if you want the park lights on all the time, you should be able to tie into the rear park light wiring. If you give me a couple days, I've gotta do it to my '69 and I'll let you know if it works for sure or not.

My '69 used to not do this, until I replaced it with a Painless Wiring Harness. I know this cause with the factory wiring, I had a pair of fog lights tied into a relay that was run off of the park front park light circuit.

Thanks for your help guys, I suspected that they were supposed to do that initially, but I did not see a reason why they would, so I assumed they were not working properly. As for the dome light, there was just a short in the wire midway underneath the threshold, it's all repaired and well. I have a few other questions, I may have to post seperate subjects if this thread doesn't pull attention any longer. Someone Installed a later alternator on my truck before I purchased it, a delco one with an internal voltage regulator-it has the threaded post and then a two prong outlet on the top-this is a common alternator used on mid 70's-80's GM vehicles-pretty common. Whether or not the person that put it on the truck wired it properly or not is in question to me, it looks like a big mess-in addition-the voltmeter is not working-the black and the black/white wires that go to it have been cut and are not hooked up to anything at the moment. Have any of you guys upgraded your alternators to this style? How did you go about it? where should the wires to the old external voltage regulator go?
