The 1968's Big Bang
So I am driving down the road... I start to climb a slight hill, and the truck started to hesitate when I tried to give it more gas. I tried to feather the gas pedal to attempt to work it out, but after that didn't work, I just tried pushing the gas more. That was when the sound resembling a shotgun going off shook the truck. At first I thought my motor had blown, but oil pressure was good; temp was good. The only thing I noticed was that my exhaust was louder. I pulled over and looked under the truck, and I saw one of my mufflers had ripped open. What would cause this? (As a sidenote: The truck is still hesitating after higher rpms.)

a major blockage in the exhaust would cause this, also does your state require cats on a 68 truck??/

This can happen if there is unburnt gasoline collecting in the exhaust system. Is the engine running rich? Does it need a tuneup? Choke not opening up all the way? These are some things I would check. Timing could make it backfire but I don't think that it would blow the muffler out like that. LockDoc

When you where feathering the gas you loaded your muffler with raw fuel. At some point it was ignited by the hot gasses and exploded.

Sounds just like what happened to me with my 67 GMC, started to climb a hill and it just seemed to bog down and have no power, feathered the gas a couple of times then floored it and BOOM!!!!
 It blew apart my muffler, it turns out the spark advance went out, replaced it with a new one and never had the problem again!!!!  So I would check that first!!!

others would know more then me but i had an s10 that the muffler exploded and looked quite a bit like the one in the pic afterwards, but what happend on the s10 was something pluged one of my pipes and it built up preshure in the exhaust pipe and it found the weakest point and made an exit
so id check the pipe for blockage past the muffler

Sounds like an ignition problem. Under load it misses, which sends a perfect mixture for an explosion into the exhaust. Then is all it needs is something to ignite it, and boom goes your muffler. Best place to start is new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
