Re: A better mechanic than myself once said......

I knew a guy I used to work with that said "crossed threads are better than no threads". He was kind of a hack, we called him The Butcher. He's not wrenching on cars anymore...

Re: A better mechanic than myself once said......

This guy was an ASE master tech will over 30 years in the field, and he was STARTING the threads for the head bolts on a new Hemi with his impact gun. And when I asked him while he was doing it, thats when he gave me those words to live by.

must have been the PO of my 72. He used metric bolts and wood screws for most of the fixes he did, I can tell if the part is original because if has the correct screw or bolt in it.

Re: A better mechanic than myself once said......

Just because someone does something for 30 years doesn't necessarily mean he knows what he is doing. Even if he does have an ASE certification.

Live by those words and you'll only have the chance work on your own vehicles in short order.

If you are going to live by those words you won't be living a very good life.

A really good old mechanic once told me this. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
I think I like that one a little better.

My favorite is..."oil and grease are cheap, parts ain't."

A constant reminder to change oil regularly and keep moving parts greased.

i bet he was doing warranty work which doesn't pay the tech much time on these jobs so alot of short cuts and down right bad work goes on especially if its a union shop

i been in the union for over 20 yrs i seen some real dispiteful work done because of management or over time been taking away on warranty work
when you work flat rate and get time taken away for a job i seen guys make work for them self by breaking parts
so if the union rep gets piss off he tells the techs to slow down more coffee breaks or longer
i also have been in a union that work during business hours then after work they walk a picket rally in front of the dealership then show up next morning to work another day
rotate every other saturday

That's right, they are just very experienced at doing it wrong...which makes it very un-likely that you can ever get them to do it right.

It's better to be consistently wrong than right some of the time.
