Need Help diagnosing problem.
Went to get my pickup today after 4 mons at the paint and body shop. Looks great! Problem is my friend that did the work said that he went to crank it one day to move it in and it wouldnt crank so they had been pushing it in and out. I got there and it fired right up. Great! Next day, my wife carried me to get it and it would not crank for anything. 1987 Silverado. fuel injected TBI etc. I checked at the relay and it was getting fire going to the relay so I got under it and unplugged the harness going to the fuel pump and no fire there. Cant find any loose wires. I tapped on the fuel pump to no avail. Whats up with this????????

Re: Need Help diagnosing problem.
if you have lights on the dash but not cranking try the
starter solenoid I've have two give out on two different trucks on two months go figure turn key go juice everywhere but started would not engage swapped solenoids and good to go MArk

Re: Need Help diagnosing problem.
The engine turns over fine. It just will not crank. I cant hear the electric fuel pump kick on. I would think that the pump was bad except there is not fire going to it.

Re: Need Help diagnosing problem.
Check for loose or dirty ground from frame to fuel tank sending unit, the fuse,Verify you got the right relay,But i say if the ground is good the pump is most likely bad. You may be able to jump power wires on the relay terminal to test the pump.

Re: Need Help diagnosing problem.
If your truck has dual fuel tanks check the thank switch it could be out of detent and not allowing the pump to get power + the valve would also be 1/2 way closed/opened.
If you dont have dual tanks you can get under the truck and unplug the fuel tank harness at the production brake and using an external power supply like a battery charger or a electric drill battery thats at least 9.5 volts connect it to the pump pins and if it's good it will run if it runs the trouble is up stream of that point you will have to check the entire harness run to find the problem but i think i would check the easy stuff 1st like the relay and the fuse again to be sure that they are good. Also i think your use of terminology is really throwing people off a bit. Just to be clear. cranks = starter is turning the engine over. Fires off or lights off = the engine runs on it's own. power/juice = 12 volts Good luck. Last edited by 87 STEPPER; 09-29-2008 at 09:57 AM. |
